“I’d love to be able to go all-in on this approach, but I can’t. I have a 20% overhead cap and this would put me well above that for the year.” *sigh* Deep breath, Eric. But here we are again. Another social impact leader held back by the shackles of the overhead myth. And it’s not her fault. This Executive Director rolled her eyes even as she said this. Because it wasn’t up to her. This was a policy upheld by her board and major funders. A top-down policy for a collective of conservation-focused organizations. So now we have to scale her ambitions back massively. Try to come up with some watered down “pilot” project to prove the worth of investing in brand-building and marketing. In the meantime, her mission stalls. Her community suffers. Her fundraising plateaus. Look, I get that we have to run balanced budgets. I look closely at my own numbers for Cosmic every single week. But there are times when you need to make bigger bets. Take bigger swings. And that means you might not hit your (frankly arbitrary) overhead ratios exactly perfectly this year. You might be tired of hearing stories like these. I certainly am. But I’m also not going to stop telling them until I stop seeing the overhead myth hold the social impact sector back. Any stories like this pop into your mind? Share them in the comments. So today I went to Lohei at ACE.SG (Action Community for Entrepreneurship) with my fellow female subcomm members we're all volunteering for (another topic for another day) and I met Minister Tan See Leng! When a minister enters the room, the crowd is real. Everyone was pouring in and cozying up around. And then I asked for a selfie and he volunteered to hold the camera, no airs and all, which was nice. I snuck up for a completely random but burning curious question. "Actually, you came from the private sector right? Why did you join the public sector? What was your motivation? I mean with your capabilities, you could be anywhere." With many people behind pulling him aside to network, take photos, and shake hands - he stuck by patiently to explain and share his story, purpose, past and ambitions to me. I'm not going to share exactly what he said but all I can say is - that he came from a very different place and saw things differently, thought differently, and served differently. It was beyond personal achievements or business portfolios. And it gave me a refreshed perspective about how life is beyond commercial success and business, and what serving and living meant. It made me ponder deeply, what could I do differently beyond my scope of commercial work too. It wasn't a long download, but succinct and sharp enough to inspire me. Thanks for your inspiration! Worth reading. GreenLight Fund, founded by John Simon, is one of the most compelling platforms for "scaling what works" in the US, essentially bringing evidence based programs into 55 new locations. It unites the needs and leadership of local communities with the best-in-class programs in the country. It's more than a match-making service - it de-risks adoption/implementation for both sides of the equation, and builds a scaffolding of support (money, talent, advice) that increases the odds of success.
