For our #WhyUkraineMatters series, Gerard Toal of the Virginia Tech School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) explains how Russia's war against #Ukraine has caused profound population displacement and its potential to set a new precedent for global territorial disputes. Interesting data on Russia’s post-war exodus. On top of the dramatic losses of human lives in the war and Russia’s pre-war mortality rates, it poses huge demographic challenges moving forward. During a recent visit to Georgia and Armenia, I’ve met a number of Russians who started a new life out there, mostly in IT. For instance Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, shows a ‘building boom’ and real estate rates went up. Armenia rapidly becomes an IT Hub. Russians have more affinity with these countries then with the artificial world of Dubai and Doha. Nevertheless Georgia faces challenges with the Russian Federation as it occupied Georgian territories as Abchazië and South Ossetie. The ruling political party, Georgian Dream, forced to accept and implement the so called ‘Russian Law’ which will hamper foreign organisations to support Georgia in its ambition to become part of the West. This might impact the outcome of the Georgian elections on October 26 and could bring back Georgia into the Russian World. Armenia and Azerbeidzjan are in conflict and if the latter might would block the Armenian-Iran trade corridor this could cause tremendous economic problems for Armenia. Both Georgia and Armenia are part of the Council of Europa which has 46 members. #russia #exodus #demographics #mortalityrates #georgia #armenia #IThub #buildingboom #geopolitics #war #newlife #UAE #iran #councilofEuropa

Very proud that the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft e.V. published my recent analysis about the current #braindrain and declining #demography in the #WesternBalkans. This "brain drain" slows down the region’s #economic adjustment to #EU standards and makes it more difficult to meet the budgetary criteria for #EUmembership. One fact has become evident in my paper: the young, well-educated population of the Western Balkans cannot solve the issue of chronic #labourshortages in Western Europe through migration – not if the EU is truly interested in facilitating its pledge to enhance stability and contribute to prosperity for the region’s populace.

🌟 Exciting Research Update! 🌟 I am thrilled to share that I have recently co-authored a paper with Dr. Pedzisai Ndagurwa (Ph.D.) titled "Quality of Life in the Gauteng Province of South Africa: is the sex of the household head important?", published in the Southern African Journal of Demography Volume 23. Our study delved into the Quality of Life (QoL) Six survey conducted in 2020/21 by the Gauteng City-Region Observatory. By employing descriptive and multilevel linear regression models, we uncovered that QoL indices varied significantly between male- and female-headed households. Notably, male-headed households were associated with higher QoL indices, with the most pronounced benefits observed among White and Indian/Asian households. Our findings highlight the critical role of the sex of the household head as a determinant of QoL in Gauteng. While addressing racial disparities remains crucial, it is imperative to focus on the unique challenges faced by female-headed households across all racial groups. I invite you to read our full paper for a deeper understanding of these findings and their implications for targeted policy development. https://lnkd.in/dMySdntX #Research #QualityOfLife #SouthAfrica #Demography #GenderStudies #PolicyDevelopment #HouseholdHeadships

Recent data analyzed based on a survey of 2,000 Ukrainian adults from all regions of Ukraine, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas and territories lacking Ukrainian cellular coverage at the time of the survey. The survey was conducted via computer-assisted telephone interviewing and the results were weighted by age, sex, and type of settlement (urban versus rural) to ensure a representative sample. The survey was designed by scholars at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and was conducted by the Ukrainian sociological organization Rating Group from March 7–10, 2024. Overall results have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percent; the margin of error for individual demographic sub-categories is higher. The Generational Divide The poll results showed a chasm between older and younger generations of Ukrainians about assessments of the war’s trajectory and about policy preferences (see figure 1). Older Ukrainians, aged sixty and above, stand out for their war optimism across virtually every metric. This group had a rosier assessment of current battlefield dynamics and was more confident in eventual Ukrainian victory, more inclined to believe that the war will end soon, most supportive of continuing to fight until all territory has been liberated, and largely opposed to negotiating with Russia.

Does the data recently published by the Pew Research Institute indicate the collapse of the political foundations that constitute one of the pillars of Israeli democracy? I would like to argue that this is the case. The data collected in the survey are extremely disturbing and teach that as the days go by, the scope of international legitimacy and the foreign relations of the State of Israel are shrinking. A democratic country whose ambition is to be an integral part of the family of democratic nations, cannot afford to live with the data presented in this specific study. Therefore, the most important mechanism that needs to be taken into account, in order to get the State of Israel back on track, are fair and equal democratic elections that allow a wide space of freedom of expression for a variety of opinions and ideologies https://lnkd.in/exRTMz7D
