My first angel investment grew into a unicorn. Here’s how a $7.5 million company became a $1.5 billion giant: In 2010, I got excited about TroopSwap, founded by Blake Hall: • A third-generation military member • Veteran of over 450 combat patrols • And a Harvard MBA solving a pressing problem … TroopSwap was initially almost like "Groupon for the military". It helped service members access exclusive discounts and benefits safely. As an Army Infantry Officer, Blake saw how veterans were nearly twice as likely to fall victim to identity theft as the general population. Dealing with sensitive information like social security numbers just to get a Bloomin’ Onion from Outback on Veterans Day … TroopSwap's digital ID verification solved this elegantly. Veterans could safely prove their identity digitally, unlocking benefits without exposing themselves to fraud. With my background in Defense Contracting and Intelligence, I immediately saw the value TroopSwap provided. Plus, I felt strongly given my grandfather and father both served in the Army. When Blake shared his vision, I knew I had to get involved. So I led an early round with partners at Blu Ventures. It was an early-stage bet on an unproven startup. But I had confidence in Blake's grit, focus, and deep understanding of the military community's needs. His integrity and sense of duty to fellow veterans shone through in every conversation. As TroopSwap grew and built trust with government agencies and users, the broader potential of its ID verification system emerged. It had a huge untapped market potential: • Students • First responders • Healthcare workers • Professional certifications … So it pivoted into a broader identity-as-a-service platform, now called ID.me Fast forward to today: • Over 125 million Americans use its digital wallet • It has over 500 employees and 500+ contractors • And earns around $150 million in ARR Accessing government benefits and services, saving on favorite brands, discounts on prescriptions ... and more. And it's a true unicorn, valued at $1.5B+ and growing. Looking back, I was fortunate to witness its potential early on and partner with a mission-driven founder like Blake. While I couldn't have predicted this immense outcome, I sensed the power of Blake's vision and the depth of his personal commitment. As an investor, I've had my share of wins and losses. But ID.me stands out as my first angel investment and one of my most successful to date. Since our early round, the company has grown nearly 200x - an incredible journey to witness and support.
