Why do lots of Amazon businesses fail? One big reason is that people start them with the miscommunication or wrong perception. Some folks think of Amazon as just a side job or something they can do part-time. But that's not true. To do well on Amazon, you need to treat it like a real job and work on it full-time. If you go into it thinking you'll make quick money or only do it part-time, you'll likely get frustrated and give up. Doing well on Amazon takes time and planning for the long run, not just trying to make a quick buck. So, how can beginners succeed on Amazon without knowing much or having a lot of time? One way is to build a team. Surround yourself with people who know what they're doing and work together. Also, invest time and effort into your business. There's no easy way to succeed quickly; it takes patience, learning, and hard work. As an Amazon Agency of One with No Outsourcing What I Would Tell Myself 5.5 Years Ago When I Started This Journey 1. Commit fully: Never consider a W2 job. Burn all boats and avoid even looking at them—it’s a waste of time and distracts from your true potential. 2. Charge more, sooner: Quickly increase your rates. Clients paying $500-$1,000 per month will drain your time and energy. 3. Set bigger goals: Aim for life-changing financial goals from the start. If you had set higher goals earlier, you would have achieved them by now. Keep this in mind for your future ambitions. 4. Embrace progressive overload: The more you take on, the more you can handle. Gradually increase your workload to build efficiency and capacity. 5. Fail fast and learn: Embrace failure in every aspect of your business. Time flies, and with the blink of an eye, it's been more than 5 years since joining Amazon and working with a group of wonderful folks on the Amazon Shipping team. It's bittersweet to share that it's my last day on this team and I will move to another team effective Monday. I truly enjoyed the last 5 years and had amazing support from folks all around me as I learned my way around a corporate environment after spending nearly two decades in academia. I am also very fortunate to witness Amazon Shipping's tremendous growth in the last 5 years (scaling the business from UK to other EU markets, launching/re-launching in US, US tech team growth from a handful of engineers to 70+ strong across the org in Bellevue and Nashville). To former and current forecasting/voyager, account management/onboarding, and costing/negotiation teammates, y'all have delivered so much in the last few years and I am proud of the work we were able to accomplish together. I want to thank each of you for your support and hard work, and making coming to work each day something to look forward to. To all of my managers and leadership team, thanks for your continuous support (even after I shared that I am moving out to try something new 😀 ), and the trust all of you have given me since day 1. As I shared the news with many of you in the last few weeks, one very natural and common question I got was, "why leaving and why now?" (I guess two questions 😂). The honest answer is the same as what I shared 5 years ago when I joined Amazon and was asked "why did you decide to leave academia?", which is "I am getting too comfortable and need to try something different". I am looking forward to starting a new chapter of my career at Amazon. I will be leading a team that works on supporting the LLM service stack development. It's exciting and with a lot of unknowns (to me at least, but that's the exciting part). Thanks again!

Last week marked 6 months since I joined Amazon. Would I do it again? Absolutely! It’s crazy to think about how much I have learned about the organization in such a short period. But also, Amazon is massive, so in many ways I have only begun to scratch the surface and I think that excites me the most. Being an external hire from the manufacturing world here were the 3 biggest adjustments I have had to make. And these are my opinions about my experience. 1. Previous roles, I owned business verticles, used to controlling upstream and downstream. At Amazon it is a much narrower chain of processes but across many many sites. Upstream and downstream are partners groups. 2. Doc Writing is its own prestigious sub culture. Iterate early and often. The magic is in the process. 3. Roles and responsibilities are fluid. Instead of being cemented in a specific function and role eternaly, learn, be curious and expect to grow. Think beyond yourself.
