The need is increasing. More people need our help. Nonprofiteers are at a full out sprint and trying to keep up with less $$, resources, volunteers and more. How do we prevent the overwhelm from taking over?? How do we continue to keep positive and uplifted in the work? Hiver Simon Kiranda was so open in talking about the challenges of the work as an African founder - but from our conversations internationally so many of these nonprofit challenges are in EVERY country right now. More people needing support, programs, guidance. Social impact work is propping up global society at large - and we need to figure out how to support our changemakers to keep on running up that hill and meeting the challenge head on. How do you find support in your nonprofit work?? ______________________________________________________________ Simon is the founder of Akamwenhu Initiative Uganda - a foundation that is on a mission to improve the lives of disadvantaged, vulnerable children and young people in Ugandan communities. Simon has one of the most beautiful founder stories we have ever heard; from being a child growing up on the street himself he worked his way through university and has dedicated his life to supporting rural moms and their children - so that there is not a young boy like himself in that position again. The focus is on sustainable support and skills training in Akamwenhu's mission; they have gone from supporting a small group of mom's to creating over a hundred groups of 20-35 women who create community and support each other to succeed. It’s Giving Tuesday. Haitian needs to empower its philanthropic community with Haitian-led organizations. The 10 funds in the Economic Pledge are to create positive economic growth for Haitian-led businesses in Haiti and Abroad by creating programs to support their growth’s potential per sector with a sustainable growth and a social and equitable welfare system within a corporate structure or governance . 3-Haiti Philanthropy Fund( HPF ) which offers Haitian-led organizations financial assistance to create Haitian-led community foundations, civic organizations, civic society organizations, grassroots organizations,and private foundations to support locally-based charities and empower Haitian communities to better and more equitable access to goods and services produced by Haitian-made businesses to spurt local economic growth and development in Haiti. This will support more entrepreneurial activities and create more jobs in the localities and regions to reduce youth unemployment, delinquencies, and decimate poverty at all levels. Haiti Executive Board’s Global Vision for Haiti is to graduate it by 2050 from the LDC list of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Through our Economic Pledge campaign,Haiti Executive Board aims to raise money to diversify Haiti’s economy with their ongoing efforts to improve livelihoods and Haitian lives across the globe within 10 strategic growth funds available to support programs and initiatives for selected sectors. Volunteering in Pikine 700, st louis, Dakar: A Life-Changing Experience After my time in Dakar, I traveled to the northern region of Senegal, just a few kilometers from Mauritania, to the city of St. Louis. My destination was Pikine 700, a district known for its poverty and challenging living conditions. The welcome was overwhelming, with children shouting "toubab" (foreigner) and asking for money as I arrived. I found myself in a place where basic amenities like running water, electricity, and a fridge were scarce. The environment felt like a desert with sand and unfinished houses. Despite the difficulties, this experience has been transformative. I had the privilege of working with A.F.E. (Action Femme Enfant), an NGO dedicated to supporting women and children in need. Their work in providing education, healthcare, and shelter for marginalized groups has a profound impact. Many children who would otherwise be excluded from school now can learn and receive meals. During my three weeks there, I contributed in several ways—updating the website, creating social media content, filming a documentary, and even teaching English classes. I also helped raise over 1000 CHF for the organization. (Fundraising still going on!! As a child, I loved watching 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘩 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘺 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘸. That’s where I first encountered the word “philanthropist.” Remember those holiday giving specials? I always imagined being in the audience and finding a wonderful surprise under my seat 🤣. But here’s the thing: while I admired Oprah Winfrey’s generosity, I took for granted the acts of giving I witnessed daily living in Tanzania. The aunt who paid for a cousin’s school fees. Neighbors who ensured children in our community had new clothes and a warm meal during Eid. My grandmother often said that Tanzanians would never go to war because our communities always supported each other - if you were hungry, a neighbor would share greens and ugali. Is this a romanticized notion of my society? Absolutely. But it speaks to a truth about the society I grew up in - where institutions failed, 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯. Today, as I reflect on philanthropy in Africa, I’m struck by how the giving narrative has evolved—and who gets celebrated for it. In my work as a fundraiser, much of the focus in philanthropy is on achieving the 𝗦𝗗𝗚𝘀—a charge led by institutions outside of Africa and measured by frameworks often defined outside the continent. But I always have to remind myself that the biggest contributors to African livelihoods aren’t foreign philanthropists—they’re 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮, sending billions in remittances annually. This reflects deeply rooted values of 𝘂𝘁𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘂—principles emphasizing interconnectedness and mutual care 🫶🏾. Furthermore, we’re seeing more organized African-led institutions like the African Philanthropy Network and African Philanthropy Forum defining how we collectively give and prioritizing local solutions for local challenges. So, this giving season, let’s acknowledge the generosity in our homes, our communities, and across our borders. Whether it’s paying school fees, sharing a meal, or building systems that uplift millions, 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. According to this report by the Charities Aid Foundation, 80% of countries topping the "helped a stranger" category are African nations. Kenya and The Gambia rank among the top five most generous globally, with Liberia, Nigeria, and Senegal also in the top ten.
