I recently spent about 18 months away from corporate life working as a drilling fluids consultant back in the oilfields of West Texas & New Mexico for EOG. EOG may be the greatest company in the world to consult for. In fact, if it weren't for EOG, I likely wouldn't have lasted that long...
For those in my network who don't know the ins & outs of the oilfield, this position typically requires 14 days of work away from home and then you get 14 days off. In this industry we see a lot of posts from fathers who have to leave their families to go earn a living. Once per month there are tears shed by both sides; dads having to drive away from devastated kids and kids not completely understanding why dad has to leave for so long.
This post is not about either of those two dynamics, but rather about the Moms and Wives who are left to put pieces back together. When dad leaves, it’s the mom who has to console her kids. Then dress them, feed them, take them to school and activities, put them to bed all while getting little to no help. She is exhausted at the end of the day, leading to exhaustion in the morning. For weeks on end she sacrifices for her family with little to no recognition and no time for herself.
My most recent experience back in the field truly opened my eyes to the sacrifices that FAMILIES in the oilfield make as a whole. For those of us on the corporate side of the oilfield, please keep your people AND their families in your thoughts and prayers. Don't forget about those mothers and kids who are sacrificing just as much if not more than our employees working away from home. Those of us who are working away from home, please do not forget about our wives and mothers of our children who take everything on their backs when we leave. Pray for them, help them before you leave and give them an escape when you get home.
Let's continue to build an oilfield of strong families in the face of the challenges this industry presents.
