Recently, I read a leadership book that reminded me of a former boss who truly embodied the qualities of a great leader. His impact on my career and personal growth was profound. Instead, he guided me to explore and understand why certain methods didn't work, helping me develop a broader perspective. His approach built my confidence and instilled in me the belief that nothing is impossible. 🚀 The principles he taught me have stayed with me, and I strive to apply them when leading my own teams. It's important to have a strong sense of self-worth and not let others dictate how you see yourself. What is a #leader? What are the characteristics that make a great leader? As the years pass, I’ve become more and more curious about this. Despite having diverse areas of expertise and coming from different walks of life - great leaders all demonstrate the below characteristics (and others, I still have many hypotheses to prove). “Leadership transcends titles or roles. It’s a state of being, a mindset, a set of qualities. A true leader welcomes diverse ideas and perspectives, asks questions, engages in dialogue, and truly listens. They collaborate with and inspire others, offer empathy, and aren’t afraid to show vulnerability. A leader uplifts the people around them (without ego) and above all, is a lifelong learner.” This has been true with the exceptional leaders and crafters I’ve had the pleasure of working with (you know who you are). I have decided to identify myself as a person who does not need a title to be a leader of thought, people or organizations. I personally reject the concept of using titles to define structure and authority. For me leadership is defined by where I have been, the experiences I have had, and the things I have learned. Leadership is like steel, it is forged in failure and polished by success. Leadership is lifting people up from within and not directing from above. Leadership is that single voice in a crowd that challenges others to think differently or take a different path without fear. Leadership delivers praise and critical discussions in balance. Titles are a crutch, a sign of weakness, a demonstration of insecurity. A title is given by people in power as temporary permission to deliver a message or authority on their behalf. Had written on humility sometime back and am brining in my thoughts again as I feel that humility or being grounded are very important drivers to being great leaders… Humility in Leadership As leaders, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of success and ambition.
