The following is an excerpt from the preface in the "Handbook of die design" by Ivana Suchy highlighting the importance of knowledge in industry. Pictured is a wonderful mural at TMA's (Technology & Manufacturing Association (TMA)) main office which I passed every time I went to class to expand on my own knowledge. Although a handbook to help the diemaker, designer, or engineer. The following is true for so many areas outside of die work. I have seen first hand what a lack of knowledge means for industry and how those with the knowledge accelerate it. "The value of knowledge is enormous. It is an asset surpassing in importance many other personal qualities and traits. It's a dynamic and supportive capacity which enables us to attain our goals, avoid difficulties, be creative, be assertive, be wise. If used properly, knowledge is the main tool of creation in all areas of undertaking, be it manufacturing, business application, agriculture, or any other ven-ture. Our personal lives are immensely affected by the amount of knowledge we have acquired and the same way are influenced our communities, companies, and whole nations. But the cost of not knowing is still greater. It may run into hun-dreds, thousands, even ten-thousands of dollars, marks, pounds, or whatever currency, and sometimes even higher. It is an expense none of us can afford. The phantom of ignorance may silently creep about our companies, unrecognized, unchecked, until it bankrupts the very institution. Many firms may go belly up without ever knowing the real culprit behind their problems. And many firms do go belly up without ever knowing such culprits. The lack of knowledge is a dangerous asset. It corrupts ideas, it cripples work methods, wrecks inventiveness, and institutes a job security syndrome in many. In the manufacturing domain, an alibi is usually produced in the form of unreasonably tightened dimensions, excessive production meetings, purchase of expensive equipment and gadgets, or an outright search for scapegoats. And this extravaganza is followed by a stream of complaints, complaints, and complaints from everywhere. Knowledge is the best available weapon to curb such excesses. It doesn't matter if it is imposed from the top toward the bottom or from any other direction, as long as it brings about the necessary comprehension and enlightenment. The method of administration may differ, since some prefer learning from their mentors while others learn from their mistakes." - Ivana Suchy

The Stage If you were to place me in front of a blank canvas with the best paints and brushes at my fingertips and given my complete lack of any sort of training or development, there is a guarantee you will get a pretty decent stick figure despite having the best tools available to me. The stage is where the discipline of learning and the process of development come together. I can sometimes have this romantic view of design in that inspiration just appears out of nowhere and then there is this fully fleshed out design that is perfect in every way, but that is not how it works. Behind every great design is intentional and deliberate process, whether you realize it or not. There is one stage design I did when I was first getting started in design, I had a thought to use PVC pipe to create a large backdrop that we would uplight. I was going to paint it with blue and green metallic paint and hook a smoke machine up to it so that puffs of smoke would come out throughout the design. I skipped the discipline of the stool in doing my homework and the process of development to identify pain points as well as flesh out any issues that may arise. Along with getting a physics lesson in how PVC pipes hang or lack thereof, I also learned that PVC does not take spray paint well unless you sand it thoroughly. The end result was a dark, monochromatic, saggy mess that looked nothing like I had in my head and cost me a lot of time and headache, but more importantly I lost significant trust from my leadership. Lessons are best learned on the heels of failure, I learned to get comfortable with the stool of discipline and wrap my arm around the tension of the process. Embracing the messy and tough aspects of design is oftentimes the key to unlocking the next thing, whatever that may be. Stay on the stool, keep developing your process and never stop investing in your craft. Sometimes it is the willingness to dream that unlocks the potential inside of you. My experience with stage design taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of discipline, process, and Grit. The challenges I encountered became pivotal learning moments that paved the way for my growth and improvement as a designer. By staying focused to ongoing development and facing challenges head-on, I have learned that the journey of learning and refining one's craft is essential to achieving truly great designs.

So we are looking at offering an open course where learners (including those on the induction programme) can apply the knowledge to their business, this could offer a flexible and practical learning experience. One workshop,' Understanding Construction Drawings', is designed to help learners read and interpret construction drawings, enabling them to discuss solutions effectively. Selling to a Specifier focuses on understanding the construction design-to-order sales process, key stakeholders, and the activities needed for success. If we were to offer these as open courses. I had to find ways to build a bulletproof body. I committed myself to helping others too.  Because I know how it hurts. Your back, neck, shoulders, hips.. you name it. Nothing against architecture, it's a wonderful discipline. I learned about the importance of foundation, structure, composition, got an eye for detail and how to simplify structures into smaller pieces. Everything I use to run a fitness coaching business. I could have said I failed. I decided to say I gained double. How you tell your story matters. #recentthoughts
