Repealing the Alcohol Floor Price: What Are We Doing? As someone who has worked in the #alcohol and gambling field for over two decades, I feel compelled to speak out about the decision to repeal the Minimum Unit Price (MUP) in the Northern Territory. This isn’t just a policy debate—it’s about lives, livelihoods, and the daily reality of alcohol-related harm in our communities. The Territory has a drinking problem. That’s not an opinion; it’s a well-documented fact. We see it in the hospital admissions, the assaults, the shattered families, and the ripple effects across every corner of our community. Measures like the alcohol floor price are evidence-informed tools—not silver bullets, but essential components of a broader strategy to reduce harm. Why the MUP Matters The MUP wasn’t about punishing anyone—it was about making cheap, high-alcohol products less accessible, particularly for those most at risk of alcohol harm. Yes, it led to changes in drinking patterns. Yes, it disrupted old habits. But here’s the thing: changing drinking patterns and reducing access to cheap, high-alcohol products is exactly the point! We live with the harm every single day. It’s not abstract. It’s the families torn apart, the women at risk of violence, the kids who go hungry because alcohol takes priority. To repeal this measure without offering a clear, evidence-based alternative feels like ignoring the problem and hoping it’ll go away. We Need More, Not Less Alcohol-related harm requires a multi-faceted approach: treatment, education, prevention, regulation, enforcement, and community engagement. The MUP is just one part of the puzzle, and removing it sends a dangerous message. It’s not about cost of living—it’s about lives. If we’re serious about addressing alcohol harm, we need more measures like the floor price, not fewer. And we need the political will to stand by them, even when they’re unpopular. This isn’t just policy—it’s people. Let’s not lose sight of that. #alcoholharm Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) #NTHasADrinkingProblem https://lnkd.in/geNKeCh2

From Monday, 16th to Sunday, 22nd September, it’s Spiking Awareness Week. What is spiking? Spiking occurs when alcohol or drugs are added to someone’s drink without their knowledge or consent. In rarer cases, it can also involve the injection of drugs without a person’s permission. Recognizing the signs and knowing how to report it can help protect you and others. https://lnkd.in/eYVrJRUD #knsecurityservices #Spikingawarenessweek
