When our society talks about success, we tend to focus on what we've accomplished as individuals.
It's easy to get lost in this way of thinking, but leaders don't accomplish anything by themselves.
In fact, nothing of significance in life is ever achieved alone. To do great things, we all rely on our teammates. And to win, team leaders have to find ways to encourage the best physical, mental, and emotional performance from their players.
This is something Tom Brady has been reflecting on since retiring from football. Naturally, most people have focused on his role as a quarterback, but he was also a team player, and the way he encouraged those around him to perform better was a vital part of why those teams saw such great success.
Brady says there are seven key things every team leader can do to bring their team together and encourage phenomenal performance, here are four of them to get you going:
🌟 Put the team first. Even when facing personal adversity. This change in attitude and dedication to your team can set the tone for the rest of your career.
🌟 Show appreciation for your unsung colleagues. We get so obsessed with the "best of all times" that sometimes the team members who launch such icons into the spotlight are left in the dark. Whether it's your linemen in football or the analytics team in marketing, let every member of your team know they're valued.
🌟 Set the standard and create a culture of 100% effort. In a culture of mutual support teams are able to hold themselves to a higher level of accountability.
🌟 Recognize teammates as individuals and support them as people. Every member of a team is different. Some are motivated by recognition, others by feedback or success. Get to know your teammates and what you can do to support them.
