📢 **Stop & Shop Shutters 32 Low-Performing Stores Nationwide** 📢 Stop & Shop is making headlines by closing 32 underperforming stores across the nation to reallocate resources and boost operational efficiency. This move stems from various factors such as poor financial performance, market saturation, changing consumer preferences, logistical challenges, and a broader strategic realignment. While these closures pose challenges for employees and customers—like job losses and inconvenient shopping alternatives—they also present opportunities for Stop & Shop to invest in more profitable locations and technological innovations. Employees affected by these closures will receive support, including job placement assistance and severance packages. Customers may need to seek new grocery shopping options, and local communities might experience economic impacts. On the bright side, Stop & Shop is set to focus on technological advancements, store renovations, community engagement, expanded product offerings, and enhanced employee training. --- **Next Steps:** Looking to maximize your tax savings? #ModernExpo_retailnews Lidl plans to open "hundreds" of new stores across the UK to expand its customer base. The German discount supermarket is looking to expand in Bristol, Birmingham, Berwick, Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton, and Canning Town in London over the next few months. Lidl has published a list of desired locations for new sites to increase its presence in cities like Edinburgh, Leeds, and Liverpool, as well as towns including Woking, Wadebridge, Dumfries, and Didcot. This news comes as the grocer marks 30 years in the UK and follows a year of significant infrastructure investment, including opening its largest global warehouse in Luton. Lidl has specified that it is looking for sites in "prominent locations" with "easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow." The supermarket chain is seeking unit sizes between 18,000 and 26,500 sq ft and over 100 dedicated car parking spaces. Lidl's flexible approach will consider freehold, leasehold, or extended leasehold opportunities, making it easier to find new locations. #ModernExpo #wearemodern #wecreateretailnew #GoModern

The best lessons are those from others - large successful businesses can learn a lot from Warehouse NZ. 1. Warehouse was the “it” place to shop for everything you need at home - affordable, great range and conveniently located in most NZ cities and towns. 2. Ten years ago, in search of growth, Warehouse bought Noel Lemmings, Torpedo7, R&R sports, SchoolTex and Diners Clun Nz, amongst others. This was while Woolworth was divesting its noncore business and K-Mart was restructuring and refocusing its business. 3. The article highlighted four challenges: a) Competition- Kmart. We never used to shop at Kmart because it was always a mess and the products were mostly American junks. With the introduction of Anko and more local products, Kmart has gotten more of our custom in recent years. B) Market - consumer good market has shifted online since Covid. Their online store effort (TheMarket) failed and was shut down earlier this year. C) high operating cost. D) Losing sight of their core business. I think this is the biggest lesson of all. Successful business forgetting about their core and what made them successful is a common mistake. "They try to expand and everyone forgets about the core. The core starts deteriorating and gets slowly eaten away by competitors. I think that's what's happened, really. They didn't have that focus.” In my view, aligning the company focus with the market demand, while growing is the key. What is an area of growth or a M&A candidate that aligns with a company strategy and culture? https://lnkd.in/gBd-G6GN #newzealand #business #lesson #growth
What went wrong for The Warehouse and why is Kmart crushing it?

The latest PwC UK Store Openings and Closures report - covering the first half of 2024 - shows the rate of store closures in Scotland is at its lowest since 2017. At -0.8%, the Scottish rate is less than that of Great Britain average, which is -1.1%. The research reveals that, while net closures are stabilising, there’s a continuing shift in consumers’ priorities, which means the way we shop and use our high streets is still evolving. However, when you look at this alongside our Good Growth for Cities Index (which launched earlier this week), we see that Scots still value their local high streets. While online shopping continues to be popular and consumers value the perks of retail park shopping - like free parking - our policymakers must come together with communities and other local stakeholders to support the adaptation of our high streets. Lidl GB Outlines Plans For Hundreds Of New Stores 30th April 2024 As it marks 30 years since the opening of its first store in the UK, Lidl has announced plans to open hundreds of new outlets across the country. Lidl-StoreThis follows a year of investment in its infrastructure to strengthen its operations to support its expansion plans, including the opening of Lidl’s largest warehouse in the world in Luton. The discounter has also been enhancing its existing estate. This included the completion of an extension to its Welsh distribution centre in Bridgend, along with progress on expanding its Belvedere warehouse, which will result in its size and capacity being doubled once the project is complete. Meanwhile, Lidl has also introduced enhancements to its store estate, including the rollout of electronic shelf labels. The discounter, which has consistently been the fastest growing bricks & mortar supermarket for the past seven months, stated that it was now doubling down on its store opening programme to continue growing its market share. In the coming months, Lidl will open new stores across the country, including Bristol, Birmingham, and Berwick in Scotland. In London, where it is now the third-largest supermarket, Lidl will be opening new stores in Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton and Canning Town. The discounter has today published its latest list of desired locations for potential new stores. This includes cities such as Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, and London, and towns from Woking and Wadebridge to Dumfries and Didcot. Richard Taylor, Lidl GB Chief Development Officer, said: “We have also been the fastest-growing bricks & mortar supermarket for the past seven months in a row. With an exceptional store network and our laser focus on operational excellence, we’re welcoming more customers through our doors than ever before, which positions us perfectly for continued expansion. “As we celebrate our 30th year, our commitment to ensuring that all households across the country have access to high quality produce at affordable prices is stronger than ever. We’re planning to open hundreds of new Lidl stores but ultimately see no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. This is why we’re continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion.” NamNews Implications: *. Lidl are patently on a roll… …‘fastest growing brick & mortar retailer’… …determined to grow share by investing in geographical coverage. *. Thereby begging the question: ‘Are suppliers making sufficient effort in finding ways of accessing this incremental potential?’

The latest PwC UK | Local Data Company store openings and closures report was launched this morning. Some key findings: - Closures continue to outpace openings and the gap between the two widened again across the course of last year - The number of chain retail and leisure sites opening did increase significantly year on year however - Retail Parks still seeing the most growth out of all location / asset types - 5/7 of the key growth sectors were in the leisure space, with food-to-go, cafés and coffee shops all flourishing Certainly not all doom and gloom but the number of closures can't be ignored and some of this was driven by restructuring or sustained rationalisation programmes. I'd always point to Retail Trust and the work of Chris Brook-Carter, Mike Chiswell and the rest of their brilliant team if anyone in your network or any colleagues needed support in those instances. This is crazy to me.. 🤯 I would 100% rather have a curated shopping experience like Foxtrot than step foot in a standard grocery store. Sadly, I never got to visit a Foxtrot, but it was definitely on my to-do list. What a bummer that just five months after merging with Dom's Kitchen & Market, Outfox Hospitality appears headed to bankruptcy, closing stores across Illinois, Texas, and the D.C. area. According to the report below by Eater, 'Corporate workers were informed Tuesday morning via a conference call with management that the stores would be closing by noon. Store workers were left in the dark and instructed not to talk to customers about the matter. ' This abrupt closure prompts significant questions: was the downfall due to insufficient sales or perhaps poor management? What does this say about the future of retail? What is the real need of retail post p@ndemic? Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this! #NicheRetail #BusinessStrategy #Innovation #CPG #Beveragelndustry #FoodIndustry

Last week, I wrote about my visit to a Dollar Tree store, and the overwhelming responses and comments I received were both enlightening and informative. I heard from Dollar Tree team members as well as individuals from both inside and outside the retail industry. Their feedback was strikingly consistent. The prevailing perception is that Dollar Tree store managers face significant challenges: lack of leadership support, low morale, inadequate pay, and insufficient payroll hours to effectively manage their stores. What’s interesting—and concerning—is that perception often becomes reality. During my visit, I observed empty peg hooks, half-stocked shelves, and end caps devoid of merchandise. Meanwhile, unopened boxes were scattered across the sales floor, with even more piling up in the stockroom. Imagine the impact if that merchandise were properly stocked on the fixtures. Dollar Tree’s comparable store sales for the first three fiscal quarters were +1.7%, +1.3%, and +1.8%, respectively—modest growth compared to industry standards in the discount sector. With stronger leadership, competitive pay, and adequate staffing hours, these figures might have reached +4.6% on average instead of hovering around +1.6%. This situation underscores the importance of investing in people and operations to drive not just perception, but also measurable performance improvements.
