A common challenge in maximizing pipeline value for life science companies is the lack of aligned goals and incentives among senior decision makers. Functional/operational goals often take precedence over shared long-term incentives in product planning.
At the recent New Product Planning Summit #FierceNPP, Susan Nemetz of Corval moderated a discussion on Successful Collaboration Strategies Across R&D, Clinical, and Commercial Teams. Panelists John Harlow of Melinta Therapeutics, Josh Meidenbauer of Intellia Therapeutics, Inc., Cathi Ahearn of Bristol Myers Squibb, and Erica Paine of Chiesi USA, Inc. shared insights on how to address this challenge by fostering a culture of open communication and courage.
By exploring multiple alternatives and evaluating them explicitly, product teams can better understand tradeoffs across short-term and long-term goals, frequently leading to a better option than the momentum plan. In all cases, the result is a shared, transparent understanding of the tradeoffs.

The clock's ticking! Just less than a week until the Clinical Operations and Clinical Trial Supply Chain Strategy Meeting West Coast USA happens in San Diego (May 23rd)! We're excited to have Tanya Russell Kirkpatrick, Pfizer's Vice President, Clinical Operations Head - Oncology and Rare Disease - Global Product Development, guide our roundtable discussion on the critical topic of "Implementing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives: Insights from Company Case Studies and Exemplary Practices."
Tanya brings over two decades of experience to the table. At Pfizer, she oversees the Clinical Operations for their Essential Health portfolio and has demonstrably championed inclusivity throughout her career. Previously, she led teams in Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics, contributing directly to the development and market launch of three products.
This roundtable promises a valuable exploration of putting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles into action. Tanya will leverage real-world company case studies and highlight exemplary practices that are driving positive change within the industry. The discussion will offer valuable insights into how organizations can effectively implement DEI initiatives and foster a more inclusive clinical trial landscape.

Continuing with the theme that detailed estimates of future market potential have little role in development decisions or success, this article by David Shaywitz, MD, PhD in Timmerman Report titled "What if you can't pick winnders in R&D?" is must reading.
In discussing examples of almost-missed opportunities ranging from bortezomib (Velcade) and pembrolizumab (Keytruda) to GLP-1 agnoists (especially for obesity), Shaywitz concludes:
“In a futile effort to domesticate uncertainty, many R&D organizations, especially when things seem to be going poorly, decide they will improve decision making by imposing stricter discipline, and start affixing all sorts of quantification (e.g. probability of technical success, estimated net present value [NPV]) across R&D. These tend to be falsely precise numbers that typically provide far more illusory comfort than true insight.”
