Recruiting for an Account Manager? You may make a hiring mistake right from your advert if what you actually want is long term client retention, targeted revenue growth, increased margins, cross product selling, becoming your customer's one of one supplier in your sector, and having them providing great recommendations and referrals because of the value and consultation delivered by your Account Manager. That's all sales, and Account Management is 100% a sales role that should have KPIs and targets related to all the above. I've seen adverts that say, "you'll be managing accounts, looking after customers and dealing with queries". A good customer service advisor can do that brilliantly. But that's not really what you want. You want the till ringing, and customers genuinely feeling they are in a partnership. You need a professional sales person that knows how to plan for and deliver the success you are looking for. In my experience, 99% of the Account Managers we interview are anywhere near.
