While the electricity consumption of tech giants like Google and Microsoft may seem high compared to some countries, it's essential to consider the vast scale of their global operations and user base. Google, for instance, serves over 4.3 billion active users, with Gmail alone boasting more than 1.8 billion users worldwide. Microsoft, on the other hand, powers over 1.4 billion devices with Windows, and its Office suite is used by over 1.2 billion people globally. These platforms are integral to everyday life, facilitating communication, business operations, and essential services across the globe. The significant energy use by these companies is primarily driven by their data centers, which support millions of searches, emails, and transactions every second. These data centers are the backbone of our digital economy, enabling everything from cloud computing to AI advancements. Both Google and Microsoft are also leaders in sustainability, investing heavily in renewable energy and carbon offsetting to minimize their environmental impact. In this context, while the electricity consumption figures are substantial, they reflect the essential services these companies provide to billions of users worldwide. Their commitment to sustainability further justifies their energy use as they continue to innovate and reduce their carbon footprint. #Google #Microsoft #Sustainability #EnergyConsumption #DataCenters #TechIndustry #DigitalEconomy #GlobalImpact https://lnkd.in/gUfyKm-q

Data centres are the factories of the 21st century. 🏭 Microsoft increased emissions by 30% in 2023 v. 2020. This follows Google increasing emissions by 50%. This is obviously not good news, but it's interesting how Microsoft explains that the increase is mainly due to "the construction of more datacenters and the associated embodied carbon in building materials, as well as hardware components such as semiconductors, servers, and racks" Unexpectedly, the emissions of a tech company like Microsoft are related to "concrete, steel, fuels"! 🔩🏗️⛽ Read an extract of the sustainability report here: https://lnkd.in/eczZ5jjP.
