Congrats d.light - what an amazing journey! From an early (VERY early) insight born out of one of Extreme’s projects back in 2006, all the way to one of The Earthshot Prize nominees in 2024. 👏 When one of the Extreme student teams returned from their field visit with a host of generative insights, their excitement immediately drove them into the next stage of innovation, leading to their first prototype called "Kiran." Fast forward and now they're on a mission to transform the lives of 1 billion by 2030! d.light’s Extreme challenge was to help small stallholders display their products using a better light source than the typical kerosene lantern they were utilizing, especially because they often have to sell in the markets at night when the temperature is cooler. Their challenge quickly shifted to addressing key problems around the dangers of kerosene lanterns and the widespread need for a low-cost replacement. The original product, Kiran, was a solar-based form factor replacement for the kerosene lantern. Purchasing a Kiran would greatly benefit the sellers, especially since it would only cost the amount of a few weeks of kerosene. Since beginning their experience with Extreme in 2006, d.light has gone on to develop a full range of solar lighting solutions, and their products have transformed more than 180 million lives across 70 countries, offsetting over 40 million tons of CO2 through clean energy products and carbon projects. In Hamburg, summer is coming to an end and fall is on its way. A reason to give the sun the stage once again. Here are some fascinating facts about our favorite star and how we harness its power: ☀️Gigantic source of energy: The sun continuously radiates around 174,000 terawatts of energy onto the earth, even on cloudy days. That is more than 10,000 times the world's energy consumption. This highlights the vast potential we have yet to fully tap into. ☀️Historical milestones: As early as 1839, the French physicist Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect, which forms the basis for today's solar technology. ☀️The first solar cell was developed by Charles Fritts in 1883, but only had an efficiency of 1%. Today, modern solar cells achieve efficiencies of up to 23%. ☀️We still have some time to enjoy the sun: In its current phase of life, it is fusing hydrogen into helium in its core. This phase will continue for around 5 billion years. After that it will cool down and be completely cooled in about 10 billion years. The annual 24-hour global solar radiation average is about 220 W/m2 for South Africa, compared with about 150 W/m2 for parts of the USA, and about 100 W/m2 for Europe and the United Kingdom. This makes South Africa's local resource one of the highest in the world. A secure and economical energy supply is a fundamental prerequisite for the safety of the population. Our caverns in the Etzel salt dome contribute significantly to this. Even with a greater expansion of renewable energies, caverns can serve as large storage facilities to improve the security of supply in Germany and Europe, thanks to their enormous capacities! The size of our caverns can best be imagined by comparing them to the Eiffel Tower. They are twice as long, up to 600 meters deep. Just for comparison: the amount of oil stored underground in an environmentally friendly way in Etzel would require 100 tanks over 8 km² in a conventional tank farm!   Curious? Exciting times! Together with Distributed Power Africa, we (Africa Data Centres) have broken ground on our #solar farm in the #FreeState, #SouthAfrica! Once the #wheeling agreements with the relevant municipalities are concluded, the first phase will see power being wheeled to our #datacentre in #CapeTown (#CPT1) and the second phase will see power being supplied to our #datacentres in #Midrand and #Samrand, both of which are in #Johannesburg (#JHB1 & #JHB2).
