#hiring [Re-posting as some folks faced issues with the attached JD] Please note: You are welcome to comment or DM me with questions. Please do not send me connect requests. In the few minutes that the earlier version of this post was up, I received ~20 connect requests. I do not intend to accept any of those, and I hope readers of this post will not send new ones. Unless we are, in fact, acquainted in real life! I'm hiring for a Manager (Academic & Research Partnerships) on my team at eGov Foundation. Looking for someone with research management and M&E experience to help us build out partnerships with academic institutions, think tanks, and researchers. This role requires the ability to communicate research design and findings to audiences who may not be familiar with social science research / evaluation and impact assessment. Basic econometric and research methods training non-negotiable. (While you won't be asked to share a STATA do-file, you will be asked to read & interpret a results table. Of course, if you do have data analysis and/or visualisation skills, those are very welcome.) Ideally, you'll have some fieldwork experience yourself, or experience supervising enumerators / data collection teams. Full JD attached, with instructions on how to apply.

Make the hiring process easier on yourself with this one question. Will you hire for skillsets you can train for? Or skillsets you can't? The real life how to... I worked with an organization for years that hired people to do written financial analysis they then shared with the public. Those analysts needed to understand finance and investments but also needed to be able to write coherently and without a bunch of technical jargon. So who did this organization hire? Did they hire finance grads or MBAs? No, they hired liberal arts majors, people who'd studied literature, music, etc. They hired people who knew how to write and 👉 then they taught them to how to write about investments. Things like attention to details, an affinity for data and number crunching, communication or writing - those can be hard to train for. As for values or personality fit... impossible. Whereas training for your process or certain layers of subject matter won't be. Make sense? Drop a comment below and let me know.

Dear data science managers: Hire candidates for their processes and experience, NOT their final dollar impact. It's incredibly easy to fudge the numbers on impact. Here's a couple of ways I could do it if I wanted to (and you better believe hundreds of candidates are doing it): 👇 ⚠️ Misattribute some of the overall impact of a project to my specific contribution ⚠️ Use excessively optimistic projections rather than a rigorous number ⚠️ Outright lie Moreover, it's possible for bad candidates to have lucked into "low-hanging fruit" opportunities where even high schoolers can effortlessly drive value, while a great candidate might have been thrown onto high risk projects and struggled to produce marketable value despite extremely admirable efforts. Solution? Let impact be a footnote. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱, 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻: 👉 A candidate's ability to overcome obstacles (shows ability to execute on future high value opportunities) 👉 A candidate's ability to prioritize/iterate correctly (shows ability to identify and derisk the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 opportunities)

So, we’ve had 3 mentees who have secured a role in the last 3 days; data analyst, architectural assistant, and biotech research assistant. Here's what worked: The data analyst applied for a role with 3 years' experience when she had never worked as a paid full time Data Analyst before. Architectural assistant kept reaching out to a director, sending her updated portfolio every few months. Biotech grad reached out to the hiring manager on LinkedIn because the job portal had closed a day before. You know what’s common in these 3 stories? They pushed past job descriptions, ignored timelines, and were persistent. For some reason, we’re wired to believe that success comes from being perfect. It doesn’t; it comes from being scrappy.

Don't get hung up on job titles. A "better sounding" title doesn't necessarily mean it is a better job. It doesn't mean that the pay is better either. There are roles with "Manager" in the title that don't involve managing people. They are just individual contributors. A manager at one company may have a lot less responsibility than a data scientist at another. A job's title isn't some kind of direct mapping to pay, responsibilities, skills, quality of work, etc. across all companies. How important are job titles do you? Do you know people that get hung up on them? Let me know inf the comments down below! ---------------------------------------------------------------- If you would like to see more content like this, or content related to the following: ✅ optimization/operations research ✅ data science ✅ job searching/interviewing ✅ my hot takes Then please follow me here on LinkedIn! #datascience #job #career
