Last night, members and guests of the Australian and New Zealand Business Councils came together at Hyde Hotel Dubai, Business Bay, for a fascinating night of discussion, centred around what it means to do business as an Australian or Australian company in Saudi Arabia. Todd Miller, Austrade Trade & Investment Commissioner, set the scene with an overview of market dynamics and the current economic drivers and then our three panellists dived straight into an in-depth panel discussion moderated by Carl Dowling - Partner at CBD Corporate Services, featuring Guy Parsonage, PwC Partner and Chief Experience Officer, and Warren Blore, CFO of Hero Experiences Group as they explored the opportunities and complexities of operating in Saudi Arabia. The three very different backgrounds of our panellists meant each came at the topic from unique perspectives, which made for some great discussions, and they covered a lot of  ground including: - What is an SME in the Saudi context, and what are the opportunities right now?  - How critical are supply chains to success?  - How are Australians perceived from a delivery perspective? The key takeaway from the night is that any success in Saudi Arabia needs to be built on a solid foundation of three key equally essential pillars: 1 - Knowledge of process - learning by doing and by investing in good advice 2 - Boots on the ground - senior and operational teams need to be in situ for the most part 3 - Relationships are critical - fostered with face-to-face engagement and built over time This is the first in a series of related events so follow Australian Business Council Dubai to find out more. Just finished reading the final chapter of “The Sheikh CEO: Lessons in Leadership from Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum” by Dr. Yasar Jarrar, and I’m overwhelmed with admiration. If I thought my love for this country couldn’t grow any stronger, I was mistaken. My respect for the UAE has tripled. Imagine if every brand adopted the principles that make the UAE a global success story: consistently evolving, focusing on the future while excelling in the present, valuing new clients without ever neglecting the first. Here, customer service centers become “happiness centers,” the ultimate standard for loyalty. You’re always moving forward, not competing but leading. If brands around the world followed these values, the number of unicorn companies would undoubtedly multiply. In 2022, my life changed dramatically, and I had the world at my feet—any country, any city. But my heart had already chosen. I remember walking through Marjan Island eight years ago, back when it was almost untouched, and being moved to tears by its beauty. Here, close to the vibrant, opportunity-filled city of Dubai, lies a peaceful haven, a land created by human hands in the ocean. Over the years, this region has grown in possibilities without losing its tranquility. The UAE, in my opinion, is the best country in the world, and I have every reason to believe so. For over a decade, I’ve studied strategies to build beloved brands and searched for the perfect example. Here it is—the true Lovemark of my heart—the United Arab Emirates. I live in harmony with this country. Customer focus is my second nature, innovation runs in my veins, and my thoughts are always on the future. Dubai’s transformation is not by chance but a carefully crafted vision that has elevated it to a model city for the 21st century. 1.1 Dubai's Early Years Dubai began as a small settlement reliant on fishing, pearling, and trade. Its arid landscape limited agriculture, but access to the Arabian Gulf connected it with Persia, India, and East Africa. By the 19th century, Dubai flourished as a modest port due to its strategic location along trade routes.
