The guest lecture component of my Data Engineering class concluded this semester (Fall 2024) with Joe Reis, the author of Data Engineering (class reference textbook and the only one of its kind in the field). Joe has supported this class since I started teaching it in Fall 2023 at the Northeastern University MGEN program, and we are grateful for his continued support as the students have greatly benefited from his advice. Throughout the session, we delved into various topics, including mentorship (highlighting his collaboration with Bill Inmon), the significance of writing in enhancing conceptual clarity, fundamental principles of Data Engineering, problem-solving strategies based on patterns, the evolving role of GenAI in Agentic model advancement, and its impact on Data Quality. The students posed insightful queries, exploring ways to differentiate themselves in the field, simplifying complex topics for effective communication, writing and publishing technical literature, the criticality of data modeling, and more. We could have continued for twice as long, and the class continued to discuss it long after the talk ended. Thanks, Joe, for making time for the class and for continuing to inspire and engage a new generation of data professionals at Northeastern University
