Sputnik 1 Russians launched Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957 to start the space age. Americans were jolted out of their confident stupor that they were ahead of Soviet Union in technology race. Russians were first to put an animal, a man and a woman in space. America scrambled to respond and put its first Satellite Explorer 1 in January 1958. This also lead to America mobilizing and forming NASA in 1958 and President Kennedy committing to put a man on the moon by the end of decade of sixties. America mobilized and overtook Russia in space and put a man on the moon in 1969. One can draw a direct line from there to Hart-Celler Immigration Act of 1965 that overhauled immigration policy. It started to prioritize immigration based qualifications, especially scientific qualifications, over the national origin. This open floodgates of immigration from India, which was allowed only a quota of 50 per year till then. It all neatly coincided with India starting to produce a large number of engineers at newly formed IITs. These Engineers had no prospect of employment and hence immigrated to America. Having graduated from IIT Bombay in the spring of 1967, I arrived with the first wave that summer. It has been nearly sixty years and now there are close to 5 million Indian Americans. They are about 1.5% of the population but they are over 15% of engineers, doctors, professors, Wall Street professionals etc. They have really excelled at high-tech entrepreneurship where they are a part of over 25% of all startups. They have become CEOs of some of the most iconic corporations, including Microsoft, Google, IBM, Honeywell. One of the second generation Indian American is likely to become the next POTUS! I think Russians did a favor to America by delivering a swift kick to its behind in 1957. I think America is ready for one more kick in the behind to come out of its current stupor.
Russia like true friends to India made sure our graduates get good opportunities.. 😉
Now Indians have opportunities in India and US both before they decide. India is equally capable of employing IIT grads now and leapfrogging the change and crucial for developed by 2047. I also see people are willing to relocate to India if there is a choice as the income gap is narrowing. Having said that huge number of grads from IITs choose to go for higher study and pick up lucrative offers.
We are conditioned to think of the adversary as a nation state like Russia or China. The problem with this approach is that we are ignoring the blind spots that this may create. The kick may come from some new technology or advancement from a non-state actor somewhere. The internet has democratized who gets to enter the game. It can be almost anyone anywhere. The kick may not even be a hard kick. It may just be startups around the world delivering on the immense promise of technology to the global marketplace, outcompeting our iconic companies like Boeing, Pfizer, Gilead, Microsoft and Google.
The US has advantages on all fronts Military, Technology, AI/ Automation, Geographical location, Sphere of Influence/ Allies, Demographics except for need to undergo a Cultural change to Family/ local community values , Govt Governance/ Bureaucracy based on Budget balance, Markets/ Capitalism, Trade balance ,Balance on Immigration/Regulations /Politics/ rule of law. The Coming Elections will definitely spring forth a New Change in direction for the Country ahead. If VP Kamala Harris doesn’t win , Vivek Ramaswamy is being groomed on the Right to represent the Desi Supporters in 12 years.
Kanwal Rekhi 58 years being "relevant" in your craft is honestly tough and incredible. 🏋️ PUTIN is sending those kicks every day.. Enemies & Adversaries keep us disciplined & focused.. Both the Ukraine ~ Russia war & Israel - Iran war to a good extent is a Russia - USA shadow boxing.. some times direct boxing !! Russia irrespective of the issue at hand is hell bent on taking a stand diagonally opposite to USA.. Putin + Elon Musk really want DJT to come back as POTUS.. His support for KH is just a googly !! Whereas China really DOES NOT want DJT to become POTUS.. Very interesting dynamics.. USA + Europe vs China + Russia is the real play !! This play will be perennial.. and the kicks will keep coming as wars suit Putin. WAR is good business ~ military sales, high crude oil & gas prices and sales !! Meanwhile we in India follow a "Non Aligned Movement" principle. CHANAKYAS' own country !! 🙏🇮🇳💙
Thanks for sharing this , as a kid growing up in New Delhi with very limited knowledge of how this was getting played out in the 70 s and 80 s a few of our family immigrated and we didn’t even hear from for months them telephones were rare and extremely expensive .

1moThat kick to break the stupor, in addition to kicks from Russia & China, will most likely be the reelection of Trump to the Oval. [I think Kamala is doing a bad job avoiding interviews .. Trump is everywhere right now like he was in 2016] --- Chinese kick on tech front would be much harder than Russian kick imo. China is progressing a lot on the tech front, manufacturing, global dominance, etc. Russians, if they humbly accept a junior partner role to China, are also well poised to challenge US tech might .. but I doubt they will be able to capitalise on this opportunity that a weakened America brings forth.
