Although China’s ambition to gain control of Taiwan is clear, doing so through force would prove enormously difficult and costly. China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army, has increased the scale and sophistication of its military drills around Taiwan in recent years, honing its combat capabilities. Senior US military leaders have stressed that the US is building a “hellscape” to deter China from invading Taiwan, which practically means it is expanding military preparedness and deployment of capabilities in East Asia to prevent China from winning a “quick and sharp” victory. The U.S. has also deepened its military partnerships in East Asia and access to military bases in the region."
