Strengthening Protection Against Domestic Violence in the UAE, published on September 10,2024. The UAE is imposing "harsher penalties" on domestic violence and other related offences, according to a new law published in the government's Official Gazette . According to the Federal Decree-Law No 13 of 2024, This new law, published on September 10, imposes harsher penalties for various forms of abuse—physical, psychological, sexual, and financial—while establishing a robust framework for victim support. Offenders may face imprisonment and fines of up to Dh50,000, with even stiffer penalties for vulnerable groups. As per the law, the victim may be placed under a protection order, valid for up to 30 days, with the possibility of two extensions of equal duration. The Ethiopian Federal Police announced that multiple human traffickers have been convicted and sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year to 25 years, along with fines of up to 410,000 Birr (Approximately $41,000). The sentences, handed down by the Lideta Bench of the Federal First Instance Court, involved 13 separate cases and reflect a strong stance against trafficking. I commend the Ethiopian government, law enforcement, judiciary, and all stakeholders for their relentless efforts in bringing these criminals to justice. This decisive action is a step forward in deterring future crimes and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation. While this achievement is commendable, the journey to eradicate human trafficking continues. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is often not taken seriously by the Nigerian police, creating major obstacles for survivors seeking justice. According to a 2021 Amnesty International report, police officers frequently dismiss GBV cases as “family matters” rather than serious crimes. Survivors usually face victim-blaming, corruption, and a lack of empathy when reporting these crimes, which discourages others from coming forward and allows abusers to go unpunished. The problem is worsened by insufficient police training on GBV laws and a lack of sensitivity towards survivors. Although the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of 2015 criminalises various forms of GBV, poor enforcement, and limited awareness among law enforcement hinder its effectiveness. To truly address GBV, Nigeria must invest in continuous training of police officers and other law enforcement agencies on human rights and GBV laws. The government must provide resources like safe shelters, assault referral centres, and rehabilitation facilities. *The Zainab Alert, Response And Recovery Act,2020* The Zainab Alert, Response, and Recovery Act of 2020 is a legislative measure aimed at addressing the issue of missing and abducted children in Pakistan. Named after Zainab Ansari, a young girl who was abducted, raped, and murdered in 2018, the act establishes a system for the rapid response and recovery of missing children. It mandates the establishment of Zainab Alert Response Centers across the country to coordinate efforts between law enforcement agencies and concerned departments swiftly respond to cases of missing children. Domestic violence has become decriminalised in Australia. Victims ignored, police not charging perpetrators or dropping charges without even notifying the victim, courts letting perpetrators off with fines, perpetrators given permanent visas, victims told to just ignore breaches, victims threatened with intervention orders due to cross applications, family court allowing violent parents access to children, victims being made homeless by the family court, organisations failing to mandatory report when children are witnessing domestic violence, victims not being protected and forced to flee, support services not supporting victims and often not answering calls or returning them, support services refusing to help victims. #AccessToJustice⚖️ Following a court process that began at the end of 2022, we have been able to have a successful conviction where the perpetrator concerned has been sentenced to 20 years as of 27th March 2024 for trafficking and exploiting 3 Ugandan women to Kenya. (Read more: https://shorturl.at/aKMX1) This is one of the cases that will be able to set precedence on how Trafficking in Persons will be managed overall within the country. We are keen to see what the next steps will be -such as an appeal from the concerned parties or if they will accept the ruling. For now, we are grateful to see an expedited process in being able to have access to justice for victims of #humantrafficking. Even though this does not restore what was lost for the survivors, we are happy that they can have some form of access to justice through our criminal justice processes. Access to justice for survivors of human trafficking is an area that has seen minimal success globally. Despite efforts to combat trafficking, Global conviction rates for traffickers have been decreasing since 2017. HAART's experience in the access to justice program, has provent comprehensive victim support services and a rights-based approach are imperative for successful prosecution, as victims' testimonies play a pivotal role in legal proceedings. A trauma informed approach by all actors involved contributes to the wider success of these cases. As we celebrate this win today, we also acknowledge and honour the three survivors of human trafficking whose bravery and courage, helped the Kenyan society learn more on how organised human trafficking can be while it takes place right under our noses. 📢 Important Announcement: The Section 12 Initiative has launched the Criminalisation Index which will blow the lid wide open on the extent of overcriminalisation that exists in South African law. Non-payment of a TV license or not allowing customers to handle tobacco products before they pay for them are just some of the offenses that pose no harm to lives but could attract a hefty fine or jail time and criminal record or all. While violent crime continues wreak havoc across the nation, police, prosecutorial, and prison resources are still dedicated to combating an array of conduct and activities that should not be classified as ‘criminal’ in the first place.  The Free Market Foundation calls for a Criminal Code to be set in place enabling South Africans to easily access all the offences and the accompanying punishment.
