There are over 1 billion people worldwide living with some form of disability, yet too many still face barriers in education, employment, and social participation. On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities, while recognizing the work still needed to ensure inclusive, accessible communities. Inclusion benefits everyone, and accessibility should be the norm, not the exception. Small changes can make a big difference. Le projet Making It Work Genre et Handicap, travaillant aux côtés de 17 organisations de femmes handicapées et féministes, met en lumière la mobilisation des femmes handicapées en faveur de l'accès à la justice pour les survivantes de violence. ⚖ Les filles et les femmes handicapées survivantes de violence rencontrent de nombreux obstacles lorsqu'elles ont besoin d'accéder à la justice car elles subissent des discriminations basées sur leur genre et sur leur handicap. 🔎🔥 Les femmes et les filles handicapées subissent au moins deux fois plus de violences domestiques que les autres femmes 🔎 🔇 79% des femmes interrogées considèrent que les structures judiciaires manquent d’accessibilité pour les femmes handicapées 🔎💰Malgré des efforts importants, les organisations féministes ne reçoivent que 0,13% de l'aide publique au développement.

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and we're shining a light on the employment challenges faced by young people with disabilities in Canada. Our latest report reveals that young people with disabilities have the lowest employment rate in Canada at just 51%. Yet, an inspiring 81% of them express a desire to work if only the labour market were more inclusive and accessible. As the rate of disability among youth continues to rise — up 7% from 2017 to 2022 — it's crucial that we act to support their successful transition into the workforce. Let’s honour today’s theme, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," by working together to break down barriers. By fostering inclusive workplaces, we can unlock the potential of over 550,000 Canadians with disabilities, contributing an estimated $16.8 billion to our economy by 2030. Today marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a crucial reminder of the unique challenges faced by asylum seekers and migrants with disabilities. Some of them are: ⚫ Perilious Migration Journeys: People on the move including the ones with disabilities are forced to take dangerous journeys to reach safety. Many drown, get stuck at borders or are abducted by the EU-funded Tunisian and Libyan authorities. ⚫ Identification Issues: Disabilities are frequently under-identified or not recognized during asylum procedures. Even when recognised, often, they are not provided with the healthcare and assistance needed. ⚫Communication Barriers: During the asylum process, refugees with intellectual disabilities may have difficulties in preparing interviews and collecting the necessary information to demonstrate the credibility of their claims. Also, refugees with hearing or physical impairments may struggle to communicate due to the absence of a medium/mediator. ⚫Intersectional Discrimination: In addition to xenophobia and racism, migrants and asylum seekers with disabilities are also exposed to violence, exploitation and social exclusion. ✊ It's time to move beyond statements and take action. All member states must prioritize INCLUSIVE PROTECTION, ensuring safe routes, comprehensive disability identification, accessible communication channels, and targeted anti-discrimination measures. Let's commit to a future where migrants with disabilities are not just protected, but empowered to lead and thrive.

OLG's employee-led Disability & Inclusion Network invited all OLGers to celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) with a virtual Trivia Event!   The purpose of #GAAD is to encourage discussion, learning, and understanding of digital access and inclusion for the more than one billion people in the world with disabilities. Il y a dix ans, la Convention relative aux droits des personnes handicapées (CDPH) entrait en vigueur en Suisse. Yesterday, the BELGIAN DISABILITY FORUM published an short article about the situation of people with disabilities in Belgium. Some progress has been made in recent years, at least the EU level, but there are also areas where the recommendations of the UNCRPD committee are still identical to those given ten years ago: – Too little has been done to make public transportation more accessible. – The number of people with disabilities in institutions is still rising. – The employment gap for people with disabilities has not significantly changed. https://lnkd.in/d3frzZ3F
