Sam encourages founders to hand 20% to our first 80 people why? The start-up world has a 95% fail rate, it’s a perilous journey. This means we need the right crew to steer the ship to the X on the map. Investors and founders already lay out the hockey stick curve in the pitch deck (AKA the map) right. Though tend to forget the mindset of employees…do they really believe in getting there too? But if we give them a stake in the treasure, then they have a stake. They take the biggest risk of all joining the expedition and with equity they’ll go the distance to make sure it was worth taking it. The other piece of the puzzle is figuring out how to make that process of issuing equity as smooth sailing as possible, and explained to employees in human terms. I recently got back from an epic trip to the West Coast with my wife and son. It was part business, part family adventure, and 100% unforgettable. Last year, my son and I made a pact to see every baseball stadium. This trip, we knocked off the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, and Giants. Four stadiums in one trip—if stadium-hopping was a sport, we’d be MVPs! But it wasn’t just about baseball. We hit all the hotspots: Hollywood sign, Walk of Fame, sea lions in La Jolla, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and even an old Cold War nuclear missile site (who knew history could be so cool?). Shout out to one of my best friends, Phil Mauritz, for being an awesome host in SF! 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭; 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. It’s those shared experiences with family and friends, especially while the kids are still young and think you’re the coolest person ever (which I’m sure will fade quickly). Meeting with clients on this trip reinforced this belief. We talked investments, but we also shared stories and laughter. It reminded me that building wealth is a blend of financial success and creating a life full of cherished relationships. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. It’s about making the right financial decisions to create a life full of rich experiences.
