One of the most vulnerable population in India - women living in slums face chronic health issues due to poor menstrual hygiene primarily because of insufficient sanitation facilities in slums. This is further exacerbated by their lack knowledge and taboos associated with menstruation. Health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being, despite their social, economic and cultural status. So why should women continue to suffer? Shelter Associates is committed to helping urban poor build individual toilets. Our 3 pronged One Home One Toilet model uses spatial data to identify critical gaps in sanitation services. We engage ULBs to lay/ repair drainage lines and mobilizes communities to adopt good hygiene and sanitation practices. The toilets are constructed jointly with the families, while Shelter Associates provides the raw material, the families contribute towards the cost of construction. Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak is an Indian social entrepreneur and the founder of the Sulabh International Social Service Organization, which focuses on sanitation and social reform. He's renowned for his efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene practices, particularly in India. One of Dr. Pathak's key initiatives is the development and promotion of low-cost sanitation technologies, including the Sulabh Shauchalaya (Sulabh Toilet) which has become widely adopted across India and other countries. These toilets are affordable, eco-friendly, and easy to install, making them accessible to a wide range of communities, particularly in rural areas where access to sanitation facilities is limited. Beyond providing infrastructure, Dr. Pathak's work also involves social reform. He has been instrumental in campaigns to abolish the practice of manual scavenging, a degrading occupation associated with cleaning human waste from dry latrines.
