In universities today, members of the faculty spend a great deal of their time “dealing with bureaucratic minutia”. In addition, increasing financial pressures translate into spending more time grading the growing number of students. By rethinking and retooling teaching, AI- when used correctly- frees the faculty to spend more time with students, fully engaged with assisting and supporting their human development, “as opposed to the view that education is a matter of taking knowledge and pouring it into the student as a container.” AI is not only making higher education more efficient but completely reshaping the discipline to ensure that students get as much value as possible, retaining as much necessary information as possible. #HigherEducation #AI #Innovation #Edtech

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the 2024 AI in Higher Education Symposium which was hosted by the wonderful Danny Liu & his colleagues at the University of Sydney It was great to network and learn more about the thoughts and experiences surrounding generative AI from keen academics across Australia and other countries. From the day 3 key things stood out to me: 1. The future of gen AI in education is still very unclear. There is much research needed so we can learn how to best incorporate AI into education to enhance (rather than hinder) students’ & teachers’ experiences within universities. While it was exciting to discuss these topics with keen academics, there is also fear caused by the unknown of how generative AI will influence higher education. 2. Generative AI already has the capacity to increase the accessibility of university coursework for students with disabilities or other personal factors influencing learning (such language barriers). In an insightful talk by academics from the University of Illinois Chicago I learned about Blackboard Ally. This is an AI tool that can automatically assess the accessibility of blackboard course eprofiles and provide insights as to ways in which course cowordinators can be improve their blackboard content (e.g. by adding text descriptions to images uploaded). 3. Generative AI can make teaching & course coordinating easier for academics. New tools, such as Cogniti (developed by Danny Liu himself) have the potential to enhance marking efficiency and other teaching related skills. In summary: Generative AI is emerging in our society and will continue to evolve quickly. This is changing the way we learn and teach which can be scary when we feel like we are uneducated or displaced from our normal roles. Despite this, AI also creates many new avenues for learning. We can all be researching and investigating how we can use gen AI and specifically designed tools to enhance education experiences for students and teachers alike.
