If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough - Mario Andretti . The first European motoring competition took place in 1887, organized by the newspaper “Le Vélocipède Illustré” and the petrol merchant Emile Levassor. The event was a reliability trial, running from Paris to Rouen, and was open to “horseless carriages” (early automobiles) powered by steam, electricity, or internal combustion engines. Over 100 participants entered the competition, but only 25 vehicles were deemed eligible to start the race. The winner was the Count de Dion in his steam-powered vehicle. This event is considered a landmark in the history of automotive racing. Rallying as a motorsport takes place on public or private roads with modified production or specially built road-legal cars. A few examples: 24 hours of Le Mans in France, world rally championships held in several countries, or the Dakar Rally. . The mark of a great racer is consistency. If you can consistently lap a track at the limit, with the car responding perfectly to your inputs, you have the potential to be a great racer - Ross Bentley . Are you into Motorsport? It's a big weekend of motorsport... as F1 closes out the season in Abu Dhabi, Formula E starts a new season. Just a few hours after F1 qualifying on Saturday, Formula E's first race of the season goes green in Sao Paulo. Formula E features some of the competitive racing in the world. Last season there were 8 different winners. The podium is often separated by not more than a couple of seconds. It's a 45min race literally to the line! And this season the new Gen 3Evo cars are even better. Expected to be over 2secs per lap quicker in Sao Paulo than last year, they'll now accelerate 0-60mph in 1.82 secs, benefit from 4WD and softer tyres, and still generate c.40% of their energy during the race from regenerative braking. #RaceWeek #FormulaE #F1 https://lnkd.in/egYNdc39

🚩 Madness & Luck 'Driving in the Monte Carlo GP is like riding a bike around your living room.'– Nelson Piquet. As F1 cars are even more extensive in size, it is clear they have outgrown the famous streets. Monaco has so much history, but, alas, everything evolves. Making drastic changes to the circuit would be hugely expensive and logistically very difficult, and there is no guarantee that the racing would improve. In addition, Liberty Media is anticipating an increase in the organisers 'Hosting Fee'. Evidently, Monaco pays $20 million per season. Compared with the Middle Eastern tracks that pay more than $50 million annually. Monaco's three-year deal expires in 2025. However, the Monaco Grand Prix is considered one of motorsport's most prestigious events. Winning the Monaco GP is considered a significant achievement for drivers, often regarded as a highlight of their careers due to the race's difficulty and historic value. The Monaco GP is one of three components of the unofficial Triple Crown of Motorsport, which also includes the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Of course, its glamour attracts a high-profile throng, including celebrities, royalty, and the wealthy elite. F1 management is looking further afield at potential markets in Asia, possibly at the expense of Europe, The FIA's thinking may be tempered by the advent of the 'Green' attitude towards long-distance travel, particularly as 9 out of the 10 teams are based in Europe. The Monaco GP is celebrated for its rich history, technical challenges, unique sport, and high society blend. Making it one of the crown jewels of the Formula One calendar. As Martin Brundle famously said, 'In Monaco, you need a touch of madness to succeed. And a lot of luck to survive.'

Monaco remains the crown jewel. The atmosphere is unmatched for good reason. History and legacy play a role. So many great champions have demonstrated nerves and skill here. You can't help but feel it. The Automobile Club de Monaco have also done an excellent job at improving and modernizing their facilities. It's always going to be cramped, but that's part of the exclusive charm. The new FOM camera angles are excellent. Still a bit strange to see all the standard F1 sponsors in place of #Monaco's quirky mix of local and global brands. I do think it's time they paid more than they have, though just like Ferrari, having Monaco on the calendar is the same as an appearance fee in any other major tournament. Could they improve the race and the circuit? Sure. The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) could require the teams to use only the two softest compounds over the weekend. No point in making it a strategy race if you don't create a real and exciting opportunity to pass. Move the DRS zone. The current DRS zone is mostly useless. Make the tunnel a DRS zone and change the Nouvelle Chicane to a left-right jog and you'd have an excellent spot for overtakes without slamming on the brakes as is now the case. These two adjustments would greatly heighten the tension and provide some real excitement without requiring the Principality to spend big money on changes to the "track". One last thing: bring back the 4 day event. Monaco is an excellent opportunity to capitalize on marketing opportunities. The teams have many more sponsors who need to engage and activate fans at the circuit and online. The extra day always provides everyone involved an extra day to create and maximize the value of such an extraordinary place. Long may she reign! #F1 #FIA #MonacoGP #MonacoCircuit

Another year, and another #Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix is upon us. We all know what we'll get, a procession of cars, with limited overtaking and racing excitement around the #Pricipality's narrow street circuit. Playing devil's advocate, isn't it about time this outdated race was dumped from the #F1 season? Here are a few reasons to consider why: 1. Track Layout and Racing Quality: * Limited Overtaking: The narrow and twisty layout of the Monaco circuit makes overtaking extremely difficult, often resulting in processional races where qualifying positions largely determine the race outcome. * Safety Concerns: The tight confines and lack of run-off areas can make crashes more severe and hazardous for drivers. 2. #Technological Mismatch: * Modern F1 Cars: The current generation of F1 cars, with their larger size and increased downforce, are not well-suited to the narrow streets of Monaco. This can exacerbate the overtaking difficulties and lead to less exciting races. 3. #Commercial Viability: * Event Fee, Sponsorship and Exposure: While Monaco has prestige, it does not offer the same commercial benefits as other races. It pays the lowest event hosting fee of all races and the limited track space also means fewer advertising opportunities and fewer grandstand seats for spectators. 4. Alternative Locations: * More Dynamic Tracks: Many circuits provide more dynamic and exciting racing, with better facilities and infrastructure to handle modern F1 needs. Bigger commercial markets: Countries such as #India and #Indonesia with huge growing consumer markets and younger demographics are not currently being served. 5. #Diversity & #Inclusion: * Given its predominately elite, wealthy and white live audience, the exclusive nature of the race is not fit for purpose from a progressive sports rightsholder D&I perspective, where #F1 itself states, "Our mission is to unleash the full power of diversity wherever we go - removing barriers, nurturing talent, and inspiring change". Some food for thought! Liberty Media Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile

Just back from two days of pre-season testing at Circuit Paul Ricard in France, following two days at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya the previous week. A switch this season from the British GT Championship to GT World Challenge for the European endurance rounds - races of between 3 and 24 hours, including at Le Castellet/Paul Ricard, the 24 Hours of Circuit of Spa Francorchamps s.a., Nurburgring, Monza and Jeddah (where F1 raced this weekend). Also a switch of team and manufacturer to Garage 59 and McLaren Racing, after I raced with them at the Gulf 12 Hours at Yas Marina in December - a race I fancy another crack at this year. With 55 GT3 cars on the grid from 9 manufacturers (Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Honda, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche) and a lot of all-pro driver lineups, it’s the toughest GT racing championship in the world, so it’s going to be a massive challenge. But with my new team mates, McLaren Junior Pro race driver Nicolai Kjaergaard and Lewis Proctor, we’re looking forward to it! Here’s a (slow: getting cold tyres up to temp, but we don’t post footage of quick laps pre-season) POV lap of Paul Ricard from my helmet cam. And just to note that, from this season, all cars in the championship are running on 100% sustainable synthetic fuel, which is unquestionably the future for motorsport. 🍃 Some more images from testing (and the Gulf 12 Hours) in the comments below… #gtworldchallenge #racing #motorsport #sustainability #mclarenracing #garage59
