Attention PR folks and heads of marketing❗ Muck Rack released its State of Journalism 2024 Report 📰 (I'm a little late to the commentary party). There's a lot of great information included (see link below to the report). But I wanted to highlight some stats I found interesting (yes, with some of my reactions): ➡ Nearly a quarter of journalists produce 11 or more stories a week. (That's a lot folks. Help'em out by making their jobs easier. Understand what they cover. Give them all the relevant info up front. Don't pitch garbage. Consolidate asks. Etc.) ➡ 82% rely on subject matter experts for credible sourcing, followed by researchers at 77%. However, 70% of journalists say PR pros are either important or very important to the success of their jobs. (Good job y'all. However, only 22% see PR pros as a credible source, so we still have lots of work to do.) ➡ 48% either use or plan to use AI in their workflow, primarily for brainstorming and research. And 60% report their org has no policy for AI usage. (I'm all for streamlining process, but this second stat is scary.) ➡ 51% say social media is very important or important to producing their work (a small decline from 59% in 2023). And 70% say social media is very important or important to promoting their work. (Be there, be relevant, try to stand out...enough said.) ➡ X/Twitter is still the most valuable social media site for journalists, but it fell from 78% in 2023 to 36% in 2024. (This is a huge drop, and probably why 44% plan to use LinkedIn more this year. Furthermore, 19% of journalists suspended or stopped using their X account all together. The dumpster 🔥 is real.) ➡ Half of journalist ignore PR pitches, with 73% saying it's due to lack of relevance. And almost half get at least 30 pitches a week. ( 🤷♂️ How can we do better? They told us...44% want the pitch before noon. 51% want one follow up, 3-7 days later. 65% want the pitch under 200 words...wow that's a lot. But really folks, it's simple: pitch great stories.) Check out the entire report. What stat blew you away??

As PR pros constantly work with journalists, they must stay updated with surveys that can confirm or refute trends in the profession. Muck Rack's new State of Journalism report, which surveyed 1,000+ respondents, gave me some food for thought. What I paid attention to: - Even though most PR pitches get ignored, 70% of journalists still believe that PR professionals are either important or very important to their job success. The majority of rejections are not due to the length, lack of personalization, title, or time of writing but rather due to the pitch's relevance to the coverage area. Hence, conducting high-quality research and crafting a well-thought-out pitch is crucial. Keep in mind that journalists receive approximately 30 pitches per week. Therefore, they'll only select the most relevant ones. - 23% of journalists use social networks to help them create content. X, Facebook and LinkedIn remain the most valuable for journalists. And just like that, surprise-surprise, X is still alive. Do you remember the discussion about how soon everyone will leave? Only 19% of respondents left the platform, despite more than half considered it last year. - 64% of respondents work more than 40 hours a week, and 79% work overtime. Therefore, public relations specialists should continue to follow the standard of delivering well-thought-out, relevant pitches, as journalists have limited time. - AI is used for brainstorming, research, and drafting rather than writing a complete story. Don't use AI when writing stories, maybe only for drafts. This can only hurt the bottom line as more and more media outlets have policies against generating content. And if you disagree with this and write stories to propose using AI, doesn't it create a risk that the journalist will receive a bunch of superficial and non-personalized content from the PR pros? I suggest you read the State of Journalism report and come to your own conclusions. While surveys can be useful for slightly changing your approaches, your personal experience and skills are more valuable for achieving success 🙌 https://lnkd.in/eb3eJB36 #publicrelations #journalism #mediarelations #PR #GlobalPR

Relooking at the Muck Rack State of Journalism 2024 report and a few noteworthy items jumped out. ✅ Journalists are six times more likely to say they DON'T plan to explore GenAI compared to PR pros (this makes perfect sense as most journalists don't want to parrot back what you can already scrape from the web - more PR pros and marketing folks should follow suit) ✅ X is still the dominant social platform of choice for journalists to share their work (interesting that this response was mainly due to the lack of a viable alternative - will X manage to hang in there with this community?) ✅ Over 70% of pitch rejections are due to lack of relevance (shame on the folks pitching journalists without doing their due diligence on coverage areas, story preferences, etc. - as a long-time PR professional this is embarrassing) It is no surprise that journalists continue to work long hours, while also worrying about the lack of trust in the media and funding (and I'm sure continued media consolidation though not called out). Journalism is a vital part of our world and yet often a thankless profession. The field has its challenges, but don't we all? To quote the late Henry Anatole Grunwald - "Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault" #journalism #publicrelations #news #PR #communications

Reading a book is a joint venture with the author, they give you the instructions, you create the images. Well-crafted brand journalism can become a joint venture with your audience. Draw people to their own conclusion of your brand story with intelligent messaging; find a story analogous to yours, then report on it. Your audience will come to associate this story with the story of your brand. Respect your audience enough to participate by figuring it out for themselves. Gift them the feeling that they have come to the conclusion independently; that feeling when you 'get it.' This is brand insight and it wedges itself into viewers consciousness (especially if it’s beautiful.)

(...) Platforms Twitch, YouTube and TikTok are redefining what “live” news is, in ways that are “incredibly important” to the future of journalism (…) (...) That “liveness” redefines the concept of “live news” in that the content producer and audiences parse news together in real time, each contributing content or sources and together analyzing information. This relationship forced the three channels to make operational decisions toward balancing en gagement with editorial independence. (…) #journalism

Authenticity and relatability will redefine journalism In 2025, journalism will continue shifting toward a more authentic and relatable approach, mirroring the creator-like style that resonates with younger audiences. Polished professionalism is giving way to unscripted, human-centred storytelling that prioritises connection over perfection. Audiences today, especially Gen Z, are drawn to content that feels real—stories told by people, not faceless institutions. This means embracing imperfections, focusing on relatable moments, and presenting narratives with a conversational tone. Instead of broadcasting from a pedestal, journalists must meet audiences where they are: on video-first platforms, fostering engagement through shared experiences and genuine dialogue. https://lnkd.in/dG4rZ6Ri

The formula is simple and well-researched. Greater trust in media leads to greater audience reach that, in turn, leads to bigger revenues. Joining a constructive journalism program is one way to make that formula work. Here’s an opportunity. The deadline is close, mind you. #solutionsjournalism #constructivejournalism #trustinmedia
