Not everything has to be shoppble. I’ve seen this YouTube format used for so many ads that don’t feel like they’re designed for short term response / sales. Channel 4 has published its 2023 results which show that last year was a challenge: with the advertising market failing to recover after a difficult start, the unpredictability led to an unexpected YoY drop in content expenditure. In 2024, however, advertising revenue is expected to be flat, which provides a more stable planning base. Recent volatility has tested the broadcaster’s flexibility and proactiveness, above its competitors who are more insulated. The advertising industry in Australia is enduring a tough FY24, with February spend down by 6% versus Feb-23 (according to SMI). There were falls in every category. Digital and audio fared best while television fared worst. This comes after SMI reported that total spend in CY23 was down 2.7% vs CY22, with spend slowing towards the end of the year. The underlying issue is subdued economic growth. We forecast a return to ad spend growth after FY25, but next year will be sluggish. CTV Campaign Tip #1 Supply Path Optimization (SPO) Every advertiser investing in CTV should have a solid strategy for what you want to buy and who you should buy it from. It sounds simple but it is often where most mistakes are made. Especially if you are new to CTV. For the best results prioritize who owns the inventory over who has access or can sell the inventory. Sure, you can buy sushi at the grocery store. But is that the best option? A solid SPO strategy will: - Lower costs / CPMs - Reduce or eliminate exposure to fraud - Improve transparency - Deliver your impressions into higher-quality inventory Far too many CTV campaigns look like the example below. With the long tail of “other” making up hundreds if not thousands of apps you have never heard of. Significantly increasing your exposure to fraud. And tanking the impact of CTV in your marketing mix. If you're not sure what your SPO strategy is or where your CTV campaigns are delivering you should ask. Require transparency and make sure you are getting the best stuff at the best price.

📣UK advertising spend rose by 15.9% to a total of £9.6bn for the period July to September 2023. 💡 Did you know this marks the first time that advertising spend in Q3 has exceeded the £9bn mark?
