I really enjoy painting. Not painting on a canvas, but painting walls and rooms. I enjoy the repetitive and simplistic process. But more importantly, I love the overall transformation. From boring and dull, to something new and exciting. I have found a similar joy when it comes to building my law firm. I started with a very basic, traditional law firm. I slowly added new processes, technology and team members. All with one goal in mind. To transform my firm's client experience. From slow and outdated, to fast, responsive and efficient. While I do enjoy painting, I'd much rather spend my time creating an unbeatable client experience. #probate #lawfirm #transformation

I aspire to be a great painter. I would love to be able to paint pictures, particularly landscapes. I watch videos of Bob Ross making happy little trees, and I figure he makes it look easy so it must be. Reality sets in once I put brush to paper, however, and my trees look more like sad misshapen rocks. I can come up with an idea in my head of what I want to paint. I want a small cabin on a mountain lake, surrounded by pine trees. But I can’t translate that into seeing what I need to do to get there. The consistency of my paint is off, too runny sometimes and too thick the next. Every set of colors I mix ends up a shade of brown. The image looks flat and lifeless on the page. I am pretty sure my daughter could do a better job. I know that if I truly want to be able to paint a realistic landscape, I need to work at it. I need practice and repetition. I need lessons from an actual person (no offense to Bob Ross). And it is going to take time. There are a lot of lawyers out there that have a hard time envisioning how to make flat fees and value-based pricing work for them. The idea sounds good, but the logistics and everything that would have to go into it feel overwhelming. Not to mention their doubt of whether it could actually work for their practice area. After all, what they do is very unpredictable and impacted by the action of other parties. It is no different than my painting, though. If you want to be able to use flat fees and value-based pricing, it takes time. It takes practice and repetition. You can’t give up after one or two attempts. You can get there faster and more efficiently with outside help. But it takes commitment and more than just a few test cases to try it out. *My wife walked in while I was writing this and said, “you want to paint?” Despite being married for 15 years she had no idea – because I gave up on it after one or two failed attempts. #LawPractice #Commitment #ValueBasedPricing #DitchHourly #NML

While drafting a contract, lawyers are no less than artists. Both have a picture of the final result in their mind before they touch the canvas or type on the screen. Both understand that the beauty is in capturing the small details. Just like a painter makes small strokes to create a beautiful painting, the same way lawyers add boilerplate clauses to make the contract strong. Adding that last layer to this special piece ✨ This is a particularly meaningful commission as it represents a life event many of us go through. A time where we experience chaos and confusion. A time where we can’t understand how we’ll get out of the mess or why we’re in it in the first place. And then the clouds part and suddenly everything is clear again. We understand how this made us better people. How it helped us. Why it was actually good. My client’s business was in a bad place a few years ago and out of gratitude for its current success he asked me to create this painting. It represents the feeling of being saved from a tumultuous situation. What made the commission unusual was being asked to create a painting for a feeling. Most of my work is based on solid reference pictures. I know more or less what the piece will look like before I even begin. In this case I had to work with my client to create something that would accurately represent the magnitude of his emotions in an artistic way. In a way, this painting was created with the same chronology as my clients business. First with chaos, and then, with each layer of careful planning, a place of stability and peace.
