"We should be aiming for relevance, not personalisation" Lisa Wood brought this up yesterday in one of our team discussions and a lightbulb went off in my head. For years, the marketing world has chased personalisation as the ultimate goal. The idea of delivering hyper-specific messages, ads and content to individuals at scale has dominated martech investment, contact strategies and conference keynotes. But here’s the reality - personalisation, as most companies practice it, is not delivering the transformative results we were promised. Why? Because true one-to-one personalisation only works when you have vast amounts of high-quality data and the systems to process it effectively. Most businesses don’t have these resources. Instead, we see clunky segmentation dressed up as personalisation, which often misses the mark entirely. Companies should be focused on understanding their audience over trying to tailor everything to them. Relevance is scalable, impactful and rooted in the fundamentals of good marketing. Personalisation, when pursued without the right foundations, can become a costly distraction. As Lisa said yesterday, "It’s about delivering value, not noise."
