🗑 🌍 "We need a planetarian waste management" This weeks DIE ZEIT "Das Politikteil" (one of my favorite German podcasts) features Ottmar Edenhofer, climate economist and director of the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. If you got a spare hour this weekend listen in and learn more about global #climatepolicy, carbon market diplomacy and the latest agreement on the German climate law (#KSG). Particularly compelling is his explaination why we need to "clean up (y)our mess" in the atmosphere - aka why we need to remove CO2 (#CDR). ➡ Contemporary climate policy has three building blocks: #reduction, #adaptation and #removal. 📻 Highly recommended! https://lnkd.in/dk959SgK

It's done! Our 2024 Outlook for the German Climate Transformation has been published - the Klimawende Ausblick ! The study marks the start of a new series on the societal dimensions of the transition to climate neutrality in Germany. First of all, a big thank you to the great team of the professorship, the colleagues from the Cluster of Excellence CLICCS & the Stiftung Mercator GmbH! The input of the experts from science & civil society who took part in three stakeholder workshops was also invaluable. The starting point of the study series is that the current debate on the climate transition has a strong focus on technologies and markets. Although a transition to climate neutrality seems technically and economically feasible, reduction targets are repeatedly missed. Changes that would be technically and economically possible are not implemented politically. The reasons given are: the influence of lobbies, lack of social acceptance, lack of political will. However, these explanations themselves raise new questions! Conclusion: social processes are slowing down the climate transition, but conversely they are also driving it forward time and again. Until now, however, we have lacked methods and an overarching analytical framework to examine these social factors. We are now filling this gap. Here, I will be presenting some highlights from the study. Download link and more details (in German): https://lnkd.in/eyPqGjTc

Toward an Indo-German Green Strategic Partnership Aligning Partnership Agreements with Foreign Policy Goals Energy and climate partnerships between India and Germany are approaching a 20-year mark. Now, both countries are adopting green technologies and scaling up mitigation efforts more ambitiously, in line with global climate targets – including the goal to triple renewable energy capacities. In this policy brief, we look at the bilateral partnerships on climate change mitigation, assess how they align with the two countries’ foreign policy priorities and what a future partnership landscape could look like. 🎧 I just listened to this #podcast on German #climatepolicy, European carbon market #diplomacy and PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research’s new study on climate change related GDP losses: 🔹 PIK’s researchers looked at temperature & rainfall data for over 1,600 regions over the last 40 years, and considered which of these events were costly; 🔹 They then used this damage assessment, along with climate model projections, to estimate future damages: 🔹 If emissions continue at today's rate and the average global temperature stays within the 2 degree Celsius range, we are still looking at GDP losses at a global average of 20%! 🔸 Baseline #policyadvise: It costs us much less to protect the climate than not to. 🌍 **Exciting News for Climate Action!** 🌍 The Austrian government is considering lifting the ban on geological CO2 storage by 2025. This significant move could pave the way for innovative carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, crucial for achieving climate neutrality. As someone deeply committed to environmental sustainability, I believe this development represents a major step forward in our collective efforts to combat climate change. It's inspiring to see such progressive policies being considered, and I look forward to the positive impact this could have on our planet. In a new report, Philipp Genschel, Mirko Wegemann, and I investigate public opinion about climate change policies in Germany: levels of support, polarization, relation to ideology/partisanship, and effects of protest (using an experiment): https://lnkd.in/erKcRRQY

Zitat der Autoren: " Hence, the anthropogenic radiative forcing and associated positive feedbacks are likely model artifacts rather than real phenomena. The empirical data and model calculations analyzed in our study also indicate that the Earth’s climate sensitivity to radiative forcing is only 0.29–0.30 K/(W m−2 ). Therefore, the greenhouse theory overestimates this parameter by 56–158%."

How to avoid #climate #fraud - fake climate protection projects? A scandal surrounding climate projects in China could become one of the biggest cases of fraud in German climate protection. According to research by public German news station #ZDF, many upstream emission reductions projects are apparently based on false information. Analysis of satellite images shows that many existing projects in China were submitted as allegedly new, others without the knowledge and approval of the Chinese owners. Many projects seem inadmissible. However, their alleged CO2 savings were credited to the climate balance of the German transport. When there is money - there are #criminals. We need to end this by moving beyond faulty #certifications and sloppy #inspections. https://lnkd.in/d6Q5s8Aa

The Inherent Flaws of CO2 Metrics: Exposing Climate Project Fraud The recent ZDF investigation into potentially fraudulent climate projects by oil companies in China uncovers a disturbing reality. These projects, meant to reduce emissions, often exist only on paper, allowing companies to falsely meet their targets. This case exemplifies how systemic fraud and manipulation undermine genuine climate efforts. It’s a stark reminder that CO2 metrics are rough estimates, not definitive measures. Relying on these flawed metrics can lead to misguided policies and efforts. Bottom line: CO2 emissions metrics should guide us, but not be treated as absolute truths. They are approximations, subject to manipulation and inaccuracies. #Sustainability #CO2Emissions #ClimateChange #TruthInData Read the full article here: ZDF Investigation on Climate Project Fraud https://lnkd.in/d8VRUGhD Es gilt die Unschuldsvermutung.

New Findings: The Escalating Cost of Inaction towards Climate Change 🚨 ℹ️A study by the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, reveals a daunting economic reality: The costs of climate change are predicted to be six times higher❗ than the expenses required to adhere to the Paris Climate Agreement. By 2049, we face: 👉Potential 19% loss in global income 👉36 trillion euros in annual damages The study brings new insights, including data on the fluctuations in daily temperatures and precipitation changes that could increase damages by 50%.📈 Key Recommendations from the Study: Boost Adaptation🌎🚀: Targeted adaptation measures are crucial. At repath, we provide the most granular science-based solution needed to adapt to climate risks and act now. The time for action is now. Delay is the costliest mistake we can make. This is an interesting article from Germany, in German but these days that's no issue, on "Wind power and its devastating consequences for people and nature". It seems that Germany and the EU, and probably most, if not all, countries in Europe are doing their utmost to appease the climate activists at the expense of nature and the environment. If, and it's a pretty big IF, climate has the effects predicted by the IPCC then its impacts will be felt very gradually and significant adaptation should be possible. Conversely the negative effects of wind (& solar) power development are immediate, both in terms of damages to landscapes and forests, and continuous, due to their ability to decimate bird, bat, insect and probably also marine mammal populations. Do the politicians care? Have the NGOs forgotten their founders dreams and their mission statements?
