Thank you to Jerome Davis at Ohio State University Athletics for inviting me to participate and for organizing such a valuable professional learning day. I walked away inspired and grateful for the opportunity to learn from incredible speakers and connect again with the athletics group. Some of my key takeaways: 💡 Ross Bjork shared his leadership lessons, one of which is that – “Leaders help others rise.” Reflecting on his time at UCLA, he also recounted wisdom from legendary Coach John Wooden. When Ross asked for his advice, Coach Wooden replied: “I don’t give advice, but I’ll provide opinions based on my experiences.” What a gift — sharing stories that let others learn through reflection rather than prescriptions. 🫂 After graduating from Ohio State, Imran Nuri embarked on a journey to gather insights from 1,000 strangers across America. He asked powerful questions – “What did you wish you knew earlier?" And “If you only had one year to live, what would you do?” His biggest realization -- “We have much more in common with one another than what divides us.” 🔖 Angus Fletcher shared his research with elite Army units, identifying three key reasons leaders fail: Fear – Uncertainty causes people to freeze. Imposing their will – Tunnel vision, anger, and command replace adaptability. Mission creep – Uncertainty drives disorganization and loss of focus on primary objectives. Grateful for a meaningful day of learning and connection. Go Bucks! Beat Tennessee! #DesignYourThrive #THRIVEAtWork #GoBucks

I'm always looking for leadership lessons. This Friday night, friends from college came to town for the FSU vs. Duke match-up. Despite having opportunities to win, the Noles lost. Not only was it their sixth loss of the season, but it was also the first time they had lost to Duke in 22 tries. It's their worst start since the mid-70s. Fans are calling for Mike Norvell's job. Haters are hating but I'm watching and listening to what Norvell is saying. Yes, it's possible he's in over his head and will fail. Honestly, I've felt that way myself. But as far as I can tell, leadership shows its true colors in adversity, not when things go smoothly. This is the lesson I'm absorbing. Slow down and find the next best thing that can be done and keep moving your feet. "We still get to make the choice of what we're going to do moving forward." His message is clear: the only way to lose is to quit. "I've seen a team that's chosen to fight, a team that's chosen to continue to invest and work." It echoes Nick Saban's words: "There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you’ll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment." Norvell is pushing his team to embrace the pain of discipline, knowing it's the only way to avoid the pain of regret. Leaders find a way to keep moving forward, whether on the field or in the boardroom. There are lots of lessons here if you look closely and stay off social media. Also, there is nothing like college football and old friends. #Leadership #Resilience #Discipline

Determine the organization you want to be. Embrace those who embrace your vision. Don’t mourn the loss of those who don’t. In his junior year, my son joined a new basketball team. It was an important year for his hopes of being recruited to play in college. The team didn’t play in the most competitive circuits and their goal was not to increase visibility for the players. They were very specific that their goal was to develop each player to be the best they could be. At a time when it was important for him to be seen by college coaches, our choice to join this team baffled others. I remember being so impressed with their literature. Not only did they explicitly lay out their goal, they acknowledged that their team wouldn’t be for everyone. They knew the tradeoffs and had made the choice they felt would best benefit the players. Every single player on my son’s team will be playing in college. If you know anything about college basketball recruiting, you’ll recognize how unusual that is. I just finished up the American Icon book about Ford’s turnaround in the early 2000s. Their success could be summarized in a similar way - as CEO, Alan Mulally shared a vision and implemented a plan that went against the grain. He invited everyone to embrace it but not everyone did. Those who stayed were aligned with his vision and helped to bring about one of the most significant change efforts in American history. As leaders, we don’t need to seek consensus and it is ok if not everyone stays around for the ride. Those who do will be the right people to have on the team and that’s the most important thing. #leadership

ГоↁаЎ Conversations with my younger self... I was recently chatting to my brilliant client and fellow Liverpool FC fan Ricky Malhi about his involvement in the University of Birmingham Business School's Future Leader's Certificate program. We were discussing the advice that Ricky had given the guys there at the end of his session and it really struck a chord with me. His mantra for success? Stay hungry. It got me thinking about the advice I would give to a younger me, or indeed to my kids as Kelly Reed & I try our best to raise our boys to be top young men (a few blips aside, I think we're on track 🤞 ). Ricky's sentiment is wonderful because it suggests keeping your ego in check, working hard and being helpful. All extremely positive traits. So I'll offer up the following as my advice: 𝗕𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱. If my lads can go through life with this at the core of their mentality, they'll go a long way. What advice would you give to the leaders of tomorrow? #motivation #personaldevelopment #culture #inspiration #advice
