A Mckensy study of 35 US manufacturing sites reveals that ineffective frontline talent management leads to substantial costs. Managing the frontline workforce remains a big challenge, even with advances in automation and AI. Labor shortages are widespread, attrition rates are high, and productivity growth is slow. Companies that use better talent strategies see more stable teams, improved productivity, and a 15–25% drop in labor costs per site.

Key Takeaway: Manufacturers face significant challenges related to talent, with 50% of their top concerns involving workforce issues rather than technology, according to a recent ABI Research report. These challenges include recruiting quality staff, retaining employees, and upskilling the workforce, alongside wage expectations and increasing union membership. A lack of skilled workers is hindering digitalization efforts, with manufacturers planning to invest in staff training to boost productivity. If the industry fails to address these talent gaps, it could face a shortage of nearly 2 million workers in the coming years. 5 of 10 top issues facing Manufacturers are talent/employee related! As the National Association of Manufacturers - NAM implores the Biden administration to use the Taft Hartley act to address Port strikes impacting the supply chain, the continuing challenge will be growing the workforce - where we're expected to be short 2 million workers in a few years. Big investments are being made in training as manufacturers continue to advance and digitize their processes. Yet, without a growing candidate pool, competition for employees and costs to hire will only increase. https://lnkd.in/e89MVhUh

"The talent imperatives show that companies cannot standardize their approach to talent in the same way they standardize their machines and production systems across production sites." While manufacturers can often replicate machinery, processes, and technology across different sites to create operational consistency, talent management doesn’t follow the same one-size-fits-all approach. Tailored approaches to recruitment, training, and retention are key to staying competitive in diverse regions. #Manufacturing #TalentStrategy #WorkforceDevelopment
