I read an article earlier that said data from IPPR indicate that sickness costs in the UK have gone up 30% in the last 6 years. One of the biggest increases is in Mental Health. Whilst for some, medical support is needed, for others coaching or alternative therapy can help enormously. For example, a member of staff signed off work, due to stress had a coaching conversation, where I listened and asked the right questions. The staff member realised that things weren't as bleak as they thought - that they did have options. The member of staff came back to work a week later and has been fine since. A member of staff struggling at work, was determined not to be signed off. A coaching conversation took place, where I listened to them, we agreed some strategies and future support and sickness absence wasn't needed. Supporting staff is always better than losing staff to illness. That is why I offer onsite or online stress support coaching for businesses to offer to their employees. A small investment for big returns.

Reading recently about the investigation into an EAP organisation I feel that we are missing the main point here. I am sure the organisation has helped hundreds if not thousands of individuals over some years, however, rather than just critique their business and that of EAPs in general we need to overhaul how mental health has become such a viable business that not only puts the persons' needs on the bottom of the tree and profit on the top but also how and why industry has accepted this business model for their employees. A model that uses risk analysis and heavy triaging to offer an "unbelievable deal" (if it feels unbelievable it usually is). So why has this model prospered and been so acceptable ? Would this model have been acceptable for cardiac disease or cancer? No of course not and rightly so....... But mental health (I have been in this sector for 37 years and workplace mental health for 25 years) and it has always been a vulnerable , poor second cousin to business models (think way back to institutions where I trained, then care in the community and nursing home care) This current issue goes to the heart of mental health and rhetoric about how we need "to talk" and "reach out for help" are just broken words in a society that has always made access hard for some of the most vulnerable people. We are finally breaking the stigma around mental health and illness - trust me compared to 30 years ago we have come a long long way. People are now seeking help early on in their journey of pain and distress but then told "you're not ill enough". The paradox is unbelievable but not surprising. The only people who can change business models are the people that pay for the business as governments know. I urge commissioning organisations to explore what they are funding before they fund. Simple. When a tender that is based on 70% cost and 30% quality what do we expect. #welbeing #eap #humanresources #management #organisationalhealth

This is a good read for those of us working in Healthcare to reflect on and have discussions with those we work with and supervise. You may need to scroll down the page to get to the article, "Talking About Burnout, Moral Injury and Mental Health at Work: Tips for Health Care Workers". Recommendations are to (1) know your benefits, (2) check in with colleagues, (3) language use for those conversations. There are also several links to resources in the article and the references. We spend a significant amount of time with our coworkers and may be the first to notice they are down, off their game, or just having a difficult time. As we live a life caring for others, we are also in positions to care for our neighbors (coworkers). #employeeassistanceprograms #EAP #healthcareworker #burnout, #hardconversations #stressdisorders #secondarystress #pts #ptsd #moralinjury #buddycheck #selfcare #flourishing #recovery #ptsg #posttrauamticgrowth https://lnkd.in/eAxKi9u6

Currently 70% of C-Suite executives are experiencing burnout symptoms. Mental ill-health does not discriminate. I mention mental health and burnout in the same sentence because the symptoms of burnout resemble the ones of depression which are characterised by anhedonia. There are many people working alongside us with high functioning depression, but it's not sustainable and the long-term outcomes for health are truly detrimental. I am launching a 1-2-1 executive health consulting (NOT coaching) service and if you think you would benefit from working confidentially with a clinical professional to reduce overwhelm and improve your health, performance and relationships, then do reach out for more info. #executivehealth #csuite #mentalhealth #healthconsulting #nurseled

Did you know mental ill health now impacts 1 in 8 people globally, including 22 percent of Australians? For health care organisations, these figures will likely come as no surprise. What may be surprising, however, is the potential solution: far from being the sole domain of psychiatrists and psychologists, mental health is now a sector-wide challenge that all health professionals will encounter at some point in their careers. Investing in #mentalhealth training for your #healthprofessional team is good for staff and good for patients and clients. Read the full article below 👇

In a special edition of the Review of Public Personnel Administration (ROPPA) and Sage "When Perceptions of Public Service harms the Public Servant: Predictors of Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in Government", read about how public servants’ mental health can impact how, how well, and to whom services are delivered. Professors Brenda Sciepura and Elizabeth Linos extend the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework to consider whether employees’ perceptions of themselves, their co-workers, and beneficiaries predict higher psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic.
