Embarking on My Graduate Journey at Clark University School of Business. Three Weeks In and Counting! 🎓🌍✨ It’s been a little over three weeks since I started my academic journey at Clark University in Massachusetts, and I’m thrilled to be part of this community. It's been a whirlwind of experiences, learning, and meeting incredible people from all around the world. The first days were a blur of excitement as I mingled with people from all over the world, each of us finding our place in this vibrant, international mosaic. As an international graduate student, there’s always a mix of emotions. There’s the thrill of exploring a new culture, the excitement of diving deep into new subjects, but also the challenge of adapting to a new academic system. In these early weeks, we all seem to share that subtle blend of hope and nerves, from figuring out where the best study spots are to realizing that the first semester is all about finding our rhythm. 🎶 The expectations? They’re big! We dream of gaining expertise in our fields, building lasting friendships, and making a difference in the world. But also, the small victories matter – like getting through the first round of assignments and learning to balance it all. It’s a journey of both personal and intellectual growth. Whether through campus activities or group projects, we’re forming bonds that will last beyond the classroom. It’s funny how quickly time flies. From the initial flurry of orientations and introductions, I soon found myself settling into a routine. But even now, there’s a sense that this is just the beginning. The semester ahead promises new challenges, new lessons, and new opportunities for growth. I can feel the anticipation building like a wave rising before it breaks. As I look ahead, there’s a sense of excitement and curiosity about what the future holds. Each day, I’m discovering more about myself and the world around me. With GCSE results day facing students around the UK today, many will be planning their next steps whether that’s College, an apprenticeship or going straight into work. But for many young people from less privileged backgrounds this may not be a straightforward decision. There are more factors at play that can impact a young person’s next steps, it’s not as simple as the results achieved. It’s crucial for employers to recognise there are more ways to identify top talent other than grades and that there is immense value to be gained from building a workforce made up of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. That's why we're incredibly proud at BIE to have partnered with both The Aldridge Foundation and Drive Forward Foundation which are dedicated to improving access to opportunities for young people pre and post-GCSE results day. Both organisations have a range of programmes that aim to upskill young people with crucial skills needed to enter the workplace and break down systemic barriers that can prevent young people from achieving their goals. Their work contributes to a more even playing field for young people as well as improving social mobility overall. A huge congratulations to everyone receiving their results today, and a big reminder that grades do not define your future or your success. 

🌟 Championing Adaptability: Lessons from High School DECA 🌟 Reflecting on my journey, I realize how much my high school DECA experience in the mid-1990s has shaped my approach to adaptability in both life and career. 💼✨ Picture this: a small bayou town in one of the most southern points of Louisiana, Terrebonne Parish, known for its fishing and oil and gas industries. This unique backdrop set the stage for our DECA adventures. Our teacher challenged us to navigate the real-world job market, pushing us to find employment. While some sought jobs in their desired fields, others took a more diversified approach, finding roles that aligned with their goals, even if they weren't in their chosen fields. It wasn’t easy. We faced numerous challenges in securing jobs, especially in a town with limited career paths outside fishing and oil. Yet, each job secured was a victory, a glimpse into our future realities and a testament to our adaptability. DECA taught us to think on our feet, pivot strategies, and work together under pressure, whether in competitions, organizing events, or developing marketing campaigns. Adaptability was at the heart of it all. 📈💡 From DECA, I learned invaluable lessons: sharpening problem-solving skills, the importance of teamwork, and the necessity of continuous learning to stay relevant in a changing market. One specific challenge I remember was organizing a community event on a tight budget—an exercise in creativity and resourcefulness that still serves me today. 🚀 To all current DECA members and alumni, remember that the skills you’re honing now will be invaluable in the future. Today was my first day back at Kingston University after being away for a year n half on placement. It’s always a challenge to get back on track, especially when your friends have graduated and you find yourself surrounded by new faces. But I’m looking at it as a fresh start, an opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and make the most of my final year. We’re less than three weeks away from the #KDGrad ceremony and I'm counting down my Top 10 Kelley Moments over the last three years. At number 3, Kelley. On. Campus. Everything that makes the Indiana University - Kelley School of Business great is embodied within this 5 day period. Many students attend after their first term or two. For some it’s their first event before taking a single course. In my case, I couldn’t attend with most of my cohort in 2021 and had to wait to join the two cohorts behind me. I was given the option to take a substitute course but my response boiled down to: “No way!” I wanted this experience. It lived up to every expectation. My top concern to start the week was that I would feel like an outsider. If I had attended the session with my cohort, at least I would see familiar names faces from online meetings. As it was, I knew only a select few on that May 2022 roster. It mattered not. There wasn’t a stranger amongst us. Every classmate was receptive and excited to be in attendance. In particular, the first full day was filled with more laughter than I had experienced in several years (it also just felt great to not be masked around a crowd at that particular point in time). In many ways, the week harkened back to summer camps from my youth. We made countless new friends, clung to all the precise knowledge our professors had crafted for us, and ultimately put our skills to the test making a strategic recommendation for Post Consumer Brands. I could write an essay on this course, but that might ruin the fun for anyone whose future it resides. Just know this: if you find yourself apprehensive at all about the MBA journey, Kelley on Campus will put all that to rest. Nearly two years later, I can say it was unquestionably the single most exhilarating experience in a program full of thrilling opportunities.
