Are we doing enough to adapt instructional design models to the evolving landscape of online learning? I recently read "A Comparative Study of the ADDIE Instructional Design Model in Distance Education" by Spatioti, Ioannis Kazanidis, and Pange (2022), and it got me thinking about how we approach instructional design in the modern e-learning environment. The paper highlights ADDIE’s structured approach—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—yet reveals a critical gap: Is this model too rigid for today’s needs? While ADDIE has been praised for its “flexibility” in adapting to different online environments, the study critiques its “strict, linear structure,” which can sometimes limit creativity and real-time adaptability. The study emphasizes best practices like multimedia use, feedback, and interactive activities. But are these practices enough to maintain engagement in asynchronous learning? With 70% of distance courses being asynchronous, the need for engaging, learner-centered strategies is crucial, yet many learners still drop out due to inadequate pedagogical planning. What about the role of educators? The study underscores the pivotal role of educators in not just content delivery but in creating meaningful learning experiences. However, it also points to a lack of thorough educator training in e-learning design. Should we be doing more to support educators in this evolving space? It's time we ask ourselves: Is the ADDIE model still the gold standard, or do we need more adaptable, agile frameworks for today’s learners? Let’s talk. What do you think? A solid foundation of theoretical knowledge is essential for success in any professional field. For e-learning professionals, trainers, educators, and instructional designers, understanding Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy and the three domains of learning is vital for developing instructional strategies that produce significant outcomes. Here's how these concepts converge : 👉 Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy – A Cognitive Framework This taxonomy outlines a hierarchy of cognitive skills learners should develop: Remembering: Retrieving essential facts or concepts Understanding: Grasping and interpreting information Applying: Utilizing knowledge in practical contexts Analyzing: Breaking down information to explore relationships Evaluating: Making judgments based on criteria or standards Creating: Combining elements to generate new ideas Integrating these levels into instructional design ensures learners advance from foundational knowledge to complex, higher-order thinking, promoting deeper learning. 🔑 Linking the Learning Domains Applying Bloom’s taxonomy within the three domains of learning enables more holistic instructional design: Cognitive Domain (Knowledge)- Bloom’s framework fits within this domain, helping organize learning from basic recall to innovative problem-solving. eLearning programs can leverage this structure to support learner progression and cultivate critical thinking. Affective Domain (Attitude)- Learning goes beyond content mastery; it’s about shaping positive attitudes and emotional engagement. Using strategies like reflection and peer interaction, designers can foster emotional connections and align learning with learners’ values. Psychomotor Domain (Skills)- This domain emphasizes developing practical skills. Instructional design can incorporate Bloom’s higher levels like "Applying" and "Creating" through hands-on tasks, simulations (if the infrastructure is conducive), or role-playing to encourage active skill-building. 🎯 Integrating It All - By combining Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy with the learning domains, instructional designers can create well-rounded eLearning experiences that support knowledge growth, foster positive mindsets, and enhance practical skills. Inviting practising instructional designers to share their invaluable ideas and strategies in the comments below! 👇 #InstructionalDesign #BloomTaxonomy #eLearning #CognitiveSkills #AffectiveLearning #SkillsDevelopment #LearningAndDevelopment

🎯 Instructional design project kick-off questions❓ If you could ask only 5 questions from a future client or manager at the beginning of a digital learning project, what would you inquire about? It's difficult to define what exactly the service or the deliverable is going to be when we embark on the journey of building online learning programmes. There are a lot of amazing creative decisions along the way, but there are also plenty of variables in terms of outcomes, costs, goals, stakeholders and so on. Even though the actual (design, development) work is going to be done at a later stage, defining the main aspects as early as possible is crucial for success. Would you rather focus on the technical details such as the authoring tool(s) and media format? Or would you mainly channel your attention towards the learners and the goals of the learning experience? To make the situation easier, let's use this request as a starting point: "We are looking to develop a comprehensive digital learning course focusing on health and safety within our organisation. The course should cover essential aspects without getting too specific, ensuring it is accessible and relevant to a broad audience. We're open to creative approaches that engage learners while meeting regulatory requirements." #instructionaldesign #projectmanagement #digitallearning #learninganddevelopment #learninganddevelopment #learningexperiencedesign #learningmanagementsystem #digitalplatform

What sets our instructional design process apart? It's our 4A Learning Design Model, a method that is the foundation for everything we do—from our processes and templates to coaching and quality assurance. The 4A model places the learner brain in the center of the learning experience and the process is: Attend, Analyze, Associate, Apply. This model isn’t just a theory, it’s the process brains must follow to learn something new, and it’s a formula for game changing learning. Here’s how the 4As make a real impact: 1️⃣ Attend: The learning cycle begins with attention, the cognitive process of filtering inputs determining what we will pay attention to and what we will ignore. As learning designers, we need to realize that attention is not captured once and done, it must be managed throughout the learning experience. 2️⃣ Analyze: This phase engages working memory as learners connect new information with existing knowledge, ensuring relevance and retention. If connections are made, the learning advances, and if not the focus might shift, demonstrating the need for well-structured content that resonates personally. 3️⃣ Associate: Here, learners integrate new insights with their existing knowledge base, often leading to new ideas and deeper understanding. This stage is crucial for preparing learners to apply these insights in real-world scenarios. By encouraging reflection and discussion, we foster a personal connection with the content, motivating learners to embrace and expand their knowledge. 4️⃣ Apply: Finally, true mastery involves more than passing a test—it requires applying what's learned in real, often challenging environments. This stage is about action and transformation, as learners synthesize new ideas into changed behaviors through practical application. Remember, engagement is not a one-time event at the beginning of a course. True engagement is an ongoing commitment throughout the educational process. 🌟 Interested in going deeper into the 4A Learning Design Model and discovering how it can revolutionize your learning strategies? Download my free Ebook 👉 https://buff.ly/3UoetIB I look forward to seeing how you integrate the 4A model into your designs to inspire, engage, and educate! #learningdesign #professionaldevelopment #earnwithlearning #educationinnovation
