I'm "beyond excited" that my first viral Mastodon post contained the hashtag #enshittification. 🥳 When Mark Zuckerberg posted on Threads about how sad he is about not being able to launch new AI features for EU users, there was already much rejoicing from Europeans on that social network. As it just happens, the major Fediverse network of #Mastodon also loves to see how tech giants aren't able to just do anything they like with user data and AI - because of those pesky EU regulations. Yeah, it sucks when legislation attempts to protect the rights of individuals. Sure, it limits the kind of services tech giants are able to launch. That is exactly the point. Corporations SHOULD be cautious about the scenarios where GenAI tech can be applied to. Meta doesn't exactly have a great track record of showing how to build user trust - especially not Zuck. Back when Facebook launched, society at large didn't yet understand what was happening. So, Zuck was able to treat the users as "dumb f*cks" and design a machine to extract maximum value from user generated content and track everyone across the internet with the like button scripts. Should we believe that with AI, "this time it's different"? Or should society design legislation that makes these corporations think about the consequences of their AI features before rolling them out? Everyone's entitled to their opinion on this. You can guess what's mine.
