Cyber Pharma Wars: Concealment and Irresponsibility of Pharmaceutical Companies The phenomenon of "Cyber Pharma Wars" refers to the conflicts and tactics used by pharmaceutical companies and cybercriminals in the world of online drug sales. These battles encompass the illegal online pharmacy market, which sells counterfeit drugs, often utilizing unethical advertising methods through spam and malicious software botnet networks. This issue has become a serious threat to user health and global internet security, with pharmaceutical companies often playing a key, yet controversial, role in its escalation. Although the online pharmaceutical battles between legitimate and illegal markets have become a serious threat to health and safety, pharmaceutical companies, which are at the center of these events, remain largely irresponsible. Their insufficient attention to product safety and law enforcement enables dangerous drug trade on the black market. In this context, it is clear that pharmaceutical companies must take greater responsibility for their products and distribution and take concrete steps to stop the spread of illegal online pharmacies. Chronology of the Wars 2014: The Dragonfly attack, one of the first well-documented cyberattacks on the pharmaceutical industry, was a cyber-espionage attack also known as Energetic Bear. The attackers' goal was to steal intellectual property, including production processes and sensitive data, to gain a competitive advantage. 2017: Wannacry Ransomware attack—which affected various industries worldwide, also impacted pharmaceutical companies. The attack paralyzed systems by encrypting data and demanding ransom. 2020: Targeting COVID-19 Vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmaceutical companies working on vaccines became prime targets for cybercriminals. Hackers, particularly those from state-backed groups, tried to steal confidential vaccine data from companies like Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Moderna. 2022: Attacks on the supply chain in recent years, cybercriminals have increasingly targeted pharmaceutical companies' supply chains. This includes using ransomware and phishing attacks to infiltrate third parties. Pharmaceutical companies are not sufficiently responsible in combating cyber threats. While many organizations invest in technologies such as encryption and data protection, numerous attacks, including intellectual property theft and supply chain hacking, reveal significant insecurity within the sector. ✔ ✔ Check out this article by TXOne Networks on Understanding Potential Cyber Threats to Pharmaceutical Industry. 🔐 🔐 Key Takeaways: 🔑 The machinery and systems in the pharmaceutical factory are connected to the internet, providing adversaries with more attack vectors under the trend of factory automation 🔑 Due to the acquisition and outsourcing strategies, the network infrastructure of the factory is made more complex, and hackers can potentially use compromised trusted devices to enter the intranet. ❓ ❓ How to Mitigate Potential Cyber Threats to Pharmaceutical Companies 1️⃣ Security Inspection - Taking the form of a USB flash drive, the portable scanning device can scan and clean assets of malware without needing to install software. Leveraging the portable security scanning tool allows pharmaceutical companies to both detect malware without altering sophisticated manufacturing equipment and avoid warranty violations. 2️⃣ Network Defense - OT network defense can leverage network segmentation, network access control, virtual patches, and better intrusion detection analysis to prevent vulnerable assets from turning into large-scale disasters. It also simplifies monitoring and makes it more difficult for hackers to gather information or make lateral movements within the OT network. 3️⃣ Complete Visibility in OT Environments - Pharmaceutical factories connect many machines and systems to the network, providing attackers with more initial access techniques such as Internet Accessible Devices or wireless compromise. At this moment, the factory security team needs a clear and visible platform to manage the information security of many devices in real time so that when an attack occurs, managers can immediately detect and deal with it. ⁉ ⁉ Is your organization looking to increase their OT visibility?
