"If you're struggling to find work, reach out to a recruitment agency, they should be able to help." I see people give this advice a lot, and the reality is, it's not good advice. Many people see recruitment agencies as companies who get people jobs; that's actually the wrong way round. Companies pay recruitment agencies to go and find very specific people. Often these people work in very tight niches or have very the company will have strict parameters - if these people were easy to find or applying, why would companies shell out a fee? I see more and more candidates becoming frustrated because an agency won't call them back of the back of an application or respond to cold emails; the recruiters are focused on executing on these searches or they're focused on driving new client activity. Now if you have relationships with these recruiters, you can feel disappointed they don't get back to you (which is why it's always good to build relationships when you don't need people), but otherwise it's at their discretion as to whether they want to help you out with coaching/advice out of their goodness of the heart (Ruby M. does it here, but we worked together to cap the amount of time she can spend on this because she truly loves to give back). I know not everyone understands the nuances of our weird and wonderful industry, but hopefully this sheds some light. If you're truly struggling, a career coach/mentor might be a more appropriate avenue than an agency.

Agency Recruiters: Signs you are working with a client that will most likely waste your time. 1. They do not return your calls, emails, or texts in a timely manner. And when they do reply they don’t acknowledge the poor communication. Respect is the most important part of recruiting. 2. They need to see more candidates before deciding on the one they’ve already interviewed. This can go many different ways. If you’ve brought a candidate that fits and even exceeds all expectations skill and personality wise, it should be a hire. Being required to interview a certain number for quota is a waste of time. 3. They do not provide feedback. Good recruiters should be able to adjust and find the talent you are seeking. That can’t happen if you don’t break down where they missed. If you are a recruiter and these occur to you, it’s okay to walk away from that client. I’ve personally invested plenty of time into companies that bore no fruit. I don’t write this to bad mouth clients, but help us understand as recruiters we don’t always have to say yes. Recruiters PLEASE be very careful when choosing who you accept an offer from! In first place the company which has gone from 30 odd staff to 2 within 6 months. Deals are celebrated with the mostly male team removing their shirts and having a vape in the office. Nice... Second (shared) has to go to the businesses which both recently changed all their job titles to talent acquisition - apparently done to make them sound more professional? Nope. Firstly we are recruiters, agency recruiters, we are sales people. Anyone who tells you you are doing TA isn't really being honest with you! Third (rhymes with...) the company which pays discretionary, TEAM bonus. First of all your commission should NEVER EVER be discretionary you've earned it! Secondly it YOU'VE billed why should you suffer because of the idle team mate next to you who's late every day and does *ugger all! Fourth place goes to the business where you'll be instantly fired if you don't hit £10k a month by month 3. The same business has massively high attrition rates too and the senior leadership team are dictatorial. Fifth place goes to the business where members of the team are regularly shouted at by senior management in an open plan office. Sixth place goes to the company who agree commission and don't pay out - one business in particular which has done this time and time again. They're a great source for us but honestly wouldn't you rather keep your staff than shaft them?? And that, my friends is why you should use a Rec2Rec. We've been trading for over 25 years. When a new Client asks for a 24 week rebate period.....what should you do 🤔 100% rebate for 3 months 20% (basic salary only) for first placement and then 10% for multiple hires 90 day payment terms Plus 12 months restrictions in terms of non-solicitation if you leave the PSL and a 30% fee to be paid to them if you place any of their staff" When I see terms like this (and believe me they are real, I recently came across them in an old email) I instantly know I definitely don't want to deal with this business. The 20% (average these days so hardly a winner) fee followed by 10% forever more, the long rebate, ridiculous payment terms and (a real biggie) for me, the 30% fee if you poach staff, all tell me this business is NOT one we want to deal with. If you're desperate to pick up a fee you might chance it but honestly? Ask yourself is this a business that's going to value their relationship with you as a supplier? Highly doubtful. My advice? Fast-forward straaaaaaaaaight to using them as a source - they'll be that forever revolving door AND you'll save yourself (and more importantly your Candidates who deserve better!) an awful lot of time and wasted energy.
