Had a thrilling time giving a live reading last night at Hugo House's Virtual Works in Progress open mic. I'm working on a memoir about hitchhike sailing across the Pacific Ocean and these monthly events are a way to stick to my writing schedule. If you're writing a book, you know it takes a LONG time to write one. In large part because much of the time you may be worried about writing but are not...actually...writing. After a few years of wanting to write this memoir, but not doing it, I realized I needed ways to hold myself accountable so I could get the first draft finished. First, I set up an alpha reader—meaning the first person to see my work. I submit a chapter per month to a family member who gives me feedback. Second, I sign up to do live readings at Hugo House's Works in Progress open mic. You can find them here: https://lnkd.in/gqp55EMy I was SO nervous during the first reading I did, and can still barely breathe whenever I do a reading, but afterwards I feel proud of myself. Even better, I get to hear from around 15 other writers who give us the gift of reading their works in progress. I feel whole and human during these events because we are all sharing our creative work in a supportive and kind environment. It's not about perfect, it's about sharing. In that spirit of sharing, today is Hugo House's last day of fundraising to stabilize the non-profit! Their board is matching all donations up to $25,000 and they are already at $16,598. Based on how popular (and great) this book is, this is NOT surprising at all.

Writing sprints build books📚 It doesn’t need long, just 25-30 minutes a few times a week. The problem is that we need to build the habit of doing them, and many busy writers need help with this as they juggle their work and other commitments. I’m therefore going to sit at my computer most mornings at 7am throughout June to host writing sprints for any nonfiction authors who need them. I’ll also be writing alongside you during each call. A small payment of £5 is requested to encourage you to commit to the session while also making it as accessible as possible to book multiple sessions each week if you want to. All proceeds will be donated to the registered charity Booktrust, the largest UK charity dedicated to getting children reading. Numbers are capped at ten but it might just be me and you on a call. Either way, we’ll complete a solid half hour of writing, which is all progress towards finishing our book. It is National Read A Book Day! Join me: Read a Banned Book. Amongst favorites of mine include 5 researched in my ongoing dissertation.
