Monday was my last day working with the amazing Vidispine - an Arvato Systems brand team and it coincided with it being roughly a year since I started my advisory role. Advisory and consulting roles offer so many opportunities to learn new things, and the variety is incredible. From niche technologies to corporate giants, I’ve learned a lot over the past 12 months! One thing that’s been reaffirmed rather than newly learned is that people, partnerships, and community are the beating heart of the M&E tech industry MC Patel, Chandni Patel, Gitanjali Patel and Oscar Robinson at Emotion Systems show how a small specialist tech company operating in a niche market can be trusted by the largest media companies in the world. Passion, talent and a deep understanding of their customers problems make it easy for organisations to work with them. MC may well be known for being a purveyor of fine gins but I have been lucky enough to witness how kind and generous he is on a professional and personal level. If you need #audioprocessing you shouldn’t be looking anywhere else. My history with Vidispine (and S4M) goes way back so a chance to work with them was not to be missed. Of course by this time Erik Åhlin had become a student again, Isak Jonsson had one foot out of the door and the business was migrating to Cologne. Still, the reason I joined was down to the people. The tech, in my opinion, remains the most adaptable stack on the market. If you have a well defined problem and the expertise to support it, then the #Vidicore platform is hard to beat. If you’re after a turnkey solution that can be customised, the competition is broader and more varied, each with unique strengths. With video becoming pervasive across all sectors, there’s ample room for solutions like MediaPortal, Cantemo, iconik.io, SDVI Corporation, Mimir etc. On the people side, the Vidispine team is as passionate about their tech and customers as any other team I have seen. There are too many people to thank but working closely with Holger Noske, Stefan Eckardt and Nicolas Ley has been a huge pleasure. Big thanks to all who put-up with me and my ways 🤣 . Finally, advisory or consulting roles can be a bit lonely. This isn’t a call for sympathy (no 🎻 needed); it’s simply the reality, especially in this remote working era. Perhaps I feel it more acutely, having been part of a small team pioneering new tech in a market often resistant to change. Over the past 12 months, I’ve reflected on what we achieved at OM, and I really do miss being in the trenches with the team, occasionally putting a dent in the Goliaths we faced! Fortunately, I’m still working with brilliant people and cutting-edge technology at cunoFS. Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing news about a new client who’s tackling a topic close to my #archiving past so look out for that.
