Let’s claw this back 💪. The level of junk food advertising in the 🇬🇧 gives the impression that it’s ok to eat ultra-processed foods (UPFs) all the time. In fact, that’s exactly what’s happened. Junk food advertisers have done such a good job of dominating our food system (even kids think that eating veggies is “weird”) that approx 60% of our diets now come from UPFs. It’s higher among kids and teens. Unlike many other countries, we haven’t even released a position statement on the consumption of UPFs. I wish we’d at least do that so we’re clear. And stop delaying. Had we not delayed the initial junk food ad ban, we’d be almost 2 years in now. We’ve lost so much time already - and money - that’s clear; money which could have been put towards building a better, fairer food system and foundation of health for all. Food advertising is powerful. Powerful enough to dictate a country’s food system. Powerful enough to dictate health. And our health is on its knees. Let’s claw this back. We have to if we want to be well. #foodadvertising #foodsystemtransformation #health
It's about time this was a headline. For too long we've been looking at our National Health Service and our national diet in isolation. "Put more money into the NHS... that will fix it!!" It's not the answer and I think we all know that. As Henry Dimbleby and Jemima Lewis say in their book, Ravenous, what we NEED to do is to "reshape the way we produce, sell and consume food, so that it stops making us and our world sick". THAT is the answer. Many people following me will be part of the solutions to this rather horrifying problem. For me? It's just another stat in the pile of evidence to suggest we need to become bean obsessed. Bold Bean Co | B Corp™. Yes, totally agree although sadly, Amelia Christie-Miller, even Henry Dimbleby's Leon chain isn't managing to challenge the status quo. I've just been in there, asked about who/where/how the flat breads of their wraps are made. Was first met with confusion by poorly-informed staff. Then told they're bought in frozen from suppliers. Eventually got the ingredients list out showing sugar amongst other undesirable ingredients (no palm oil, at least). The staff didn't seem to exactly love their job and find meaning in it. So, how do we actually make a genuine effort to truly challenge the way we produce and consume food? Perhaps there's a link to be made between the huge sums of money poured into UPF advertising and the utter and painful under-investment in growing fruit and vegetable ... agroecologically ... all over the city?
One good thing about the Trump presidency Josey C. is his pick for health secretary, who is very anti UPF.
A very timely article but again one that doesn't call out the real cause. Wouldn't it be better if the focus of the article and headline was on the companies feeding the addiction not blaming (us!) individuals for a broken food system... ❓ Something along the lines of "UPF Manufacturer's addictive products costing UK taxpayer £268bn per year" Companies like Coca-cola, Nestle, Unilever, Mars etc all know what they are doing... 💰 💰 💰 Josey C. I noticed you shared pictures of Ultra-processed people below - a great book! Thoughts on the above?
Totally agree! Josey C. The influence of junk food ads is huge. It’s time to push for better health standards and healthier food choices for all.
I’m a Canadian who lives five miles from the US border. A shopping trip to Bellingham kept coming to my mind after a 10 year absence. So through the border my friend and I drove, happy to be spending the day in another country. First stop, Trader Joe’s. We were on a mission to pick up a couple of requests from friends. We were taken aback as we attempted to navigate the crowded aisles at Trader Joe’s. The Welsh word “gobsmacked” is a better descriptor. Shopping carts filled to the hilt with candies, cookies, and numerous confections blocked our path as we attempted to fulfil our lists. Enough, we both thought, returned our cart and escaped the madness. When I read earlier that the average US family spent $300 a month on ultra processed food, it seemed unbelievable. Sadly, I am now a believer. It comes down to choice: health 🍎 or sickness 🍟. It’s that simple!
They need to cancel all ads for junk food. Oh wait, there's money for being sick - keep the Drs and big Pharm rich
I wholeheartedly agree, Josie. It’s a clear case of profits trumping the health of a nation.
