Two interesting facts emerged from a recent document: most vehicle thefts involve lower-level threat groups, such as violent gangs, and the majority of stolen vehicles are exported to Africa and the Middle East. Kudos to our Canadian counterparts for their innovative efforts to combat automotive theft.

We applaud the federal government on continuing to move the National Action Plan to Combat Auto Theft forward. This article by The Canadian Press recognizes the tremendous progress that has been made and, as stated by Bryan Gast, CFE, VP, Investigative Services, Équité Association, acknowledges that more needs to done: “Until the proposed regulations for vehicle manufacturers are put in place, only reactionary parts of the action plan, such as improving police intelligence-sharing, can be implemented. The new standards really have to be modernized to reflect the manner in which vehicles are being stolen and the current vulnerabilities of those vehicles." https://lnkd.in/g4_se5jd

Auto theft is still very present in Ontario. Physical deterrents are designed to add a layer of effort and risk for potential thieves. Since car theft is often a crime of opportunity, the more obstacles you put in their way, the less likely they are to target your vehicle. https://ow.ly/tlTt50Ugmoe

🚗🔒 According to a report from Équité Association via Supply Professional, auto thefts have dropped 17% in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same time last year! 📉👏 This decrease is thanks to greater border patrol, police teamwork, and better public awareness. In Ontario, theft is down 14%, and in Quebec, it’s down 36%! 💪 Bryan Gast from Équité Association says the goal is to keep lowering theft numbers and cut profits for organized crime. He mentions that efforts from all sides are needed, like making cars harder to steal and educating the public. 🚔🔍 📦 The federal government has plans to inspect more shipment containers, even at rail yards, to combat this problem. Gast is hopeful for the rest of the year but stresses the importance of continued collaboration. For more details, read "Auto theft drops 17 per cent in six months" on Supply Professional. #AutoTheft #Safety #Collaboration 🚘

"This is not a victimless crime," Bryan Gast, CFE, Vice President of Investigative Services at Équité Association, told CBC News. Auto theft in Canada continues to be viewed as a low-risk/high-reward opportunity for criminals, regardless if the vehicles are for export or domestic resale. Illegal profit margins are very high and the risk of prosecution is considerably low. However, the newly released details of Public Safety Canada | Sécurité publique Canada's National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft shows a clear understanding of the current landscape and a real commitment by the federal government to take down auto theft and protect Canadians. https://lnkd.in/gGFhCx5R
