The competition was hot in Liverpool today as 12 of Merseyside’s finest grillers competed for the right to represent our region at the Northern finals! It was clear from the first cook off right through to the last that this year was going to be our fiercest competition ever. The standard of food was off the scale and our grillers showed why they were the best in their home restaurants. The judges deliberated for quite a while to get this decision right and we had two entrants with the same score at the end of the competition! It came down to the balance of standards and time to prepare, and our winner was Mia Kennedy from Wigan! Shoutout to Kayleigh from Aintree who put on an exceptional grilling display - a very worthy runner up! A huge well done to Mia, who now goes on to represent us in Manchester later this month as Merseyside’s Griller of the Year! All of our entrants today got some Loja goodies too, so there were no losers!

Change is a constant in every industry, and recent developments have highlighted the necessity of being adaptable and resilient. With the announcement of the market closing in the next four years, I've been contemplating the repercussions this will have.... not just on my current position but also on my long-term aspirations. Although it's normal to feel anxious about the unknown, I’ve always viewed challenges as opportunities in disguise. This news has sparked a renewed determination in me to continue growing my business, Safety MNGMNT Ltd, alongside my current role. Building my venture from the ground up has taught me the importance of hard work, networking, and maintaining focus, even in tough times. It serves as a reminder that, regardless of what the future holds, we have the power to choose how we respond to change. #Adaptability #Resilience #CareerGrowth #ProfessionalJourney #SafetyMNGMNT
The fate of City institution Smithfield market was decided yesterday, with the City of London Corporation announcing the last chops will be sold after 2028. Local business owners reacted with dismay to the news. Graham Chatham, chef patron of Origin City and 56 West Smithfield said: “It’s terribly sad to see the market close after so many years. “It is part of the fabric of the City. British meat is quite rightly regarded as some of the best in the world. I only hope that we can see a return of some great independent butchers back into London to allow the general public to still have access.” Edmund Weil, chief exec of Speakeasy Entertainment, which operated high-end cocktail bar Oriole below Smithfield Market from 2015-2022, said losing the market will “change the character of the area”. I believe both Red Lobster and Top Golf were purchased by entities that weren't that concerned about the restaurants. Restaurants are tough, running a restaurant you don't care that much about is tougher: - Callaway wanted Top Golf Technology. In the potential sale of Top Golf my understanding is that Callaway is retaining the technology. - Red Lobster initial sale to Golden Gate was essentially a Real Estate play. Went very well for Golden Gate, not so good for most of the NNN buyers that purchased the building with inflated rents. - Red Lobster was then sold to Thai Union who wanted a venue to sell their seafood at what some have described as inflated prices. Restaurants are tough but to make them successful, you do have to care.

Great interview with valuable insights for anyone buying or selling a business or property. Adam Barnosky’s points resonated with me, especially that it’s gratifying to play a role in helping somebody see through their vision. Adam emphasized the importance of organized seller paperwork and complete alcohol license applications to avoid delays. I learned about the need for clear commercial lease agreements to protect the lessee and ensuring title ownership of property. Highly recommend this podcast!
It was a pleasure to have Adam Barnosky, Chair of the Restaurant and Hospitality Practice Group at Ruberto, Israel & Weiner, P.C. , joins Eric Sigman and me on the latest episode of Transaction Talk. Adam explores the unique challenges of restaurant transactions, covering topics such as liquor licensing, zoning permits, and the complexities of multi-unit franchising.
