Our paper in the Journal of Business Research is finally out: Escaping the Stigma of firm operations in EMs: Are you willing to pay the price? By integrating the stigma literature into institutional escapism view, we discuss that as EM firms seek to acquire firms in more developed markets, they face stigma that is often associated with EM institutional environments, and this forces them to pay higher acquisition premiums as a means to compensate for such stigma. Our latest ECGI Conversation is with Claudine Gartenberg (The Wharton School) to discuss her work on corporate purpose, which she presented as a keynote presentation at the recent ECGI conference on Modern Capitalism and Corporate Purpose in Copenhagen. The three papers Claudine talks about are: Corporate purpose and financial performance Corporate purpose in public and private firms; and The contingent relationship between purpose and profits The key discussion points include: ·      There is a positive relationship on average between corporate purpose and subsequent financial performance but only when corporate purpose is matched with a strategic clarity. ·      Although causation cannot be definitively proven, the results are strongly suggestive of a causal relationship. ·      The average relationship between purpose and profit hides a lot of variation. ·      Private firms and committed owners are more purposeful than public firms and short-term owners. ·      Purpose is positively related to profit in firms with high innovation intensity, intangible capital, or long-term investors and is not (or negatively) related with profits in firms and industries without these characteristics. ·      Overall, purpose can be a driver of profits in certain firms and context, but is not always: the relationship is highly situational and depends upon the context.     👉 You can see the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eSmbPcsR   We hope you enjoy the conversation.   👉 Subscribe to the series:  https://lnkd.in/eesT4CbM Tom Gosling #CorporatePurpose

Alhumdulillah! 🙏 I am thrilled to share that I have successfully defended my PhD thesis today! 🎓✨ My research delves into the intricate relationship between Financial Reporting Quality (FRQ) and Investment Efficiency, across developed, emerging, frontier, and other markets. It uncovers how country-level investor protection, financial constraints, and managerial risk-taking significantly shape this relationship. The study spanned data from 21,741 publicly listed firms across 36 countries, covering 41 industries over a period of 25 years. Key insights show that better FRQ positively impacts investment efficiency in both over- and under-investment scenarios. Furthermore, this impact strengthens under conditions of higher investor protection, greater financial constraints, and reduced managerial risk-taking.
