Mercedes-Benz announced the inauguration of Europe's first battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim, Germany. This cutting-edge facility, backed by tens of millions in investment, boasts an annual capacity of 2,500 tons and a stellar recovery rate of over 96%. This plant employs a unique combined mechanical-hydrometallurgical process that separates valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, and lithium with reduced energy requirements. 🌱 The plant's innovative approach sets a new standard for recycling, significantly lowering energy consumption compared to traditional pyrometallurgy. German car giant Audi claims to be "massively" reducing its water consumption by 2035. As part of its 'Mission:Zero' initiative, the company plans to get there using four levers: - Lever 1: Process optimisation 🛠 AUDI AG wants to optimise water usage across all production processes. The painting process is the biggest user of water in automotive production. At one site - Neckarsulum - a dry separation modification is being made, which could save 300 liters of water per vehicle. - Lever 2: Developing water cycles ♻ There is potential to obtain new processes water from automotive wastewater. Rather than sending contaminated wastewater off via external suppliers, Audi will purify it via on-site treatment plants, eventually feeding water back into the cycle. - Lever 3: Potable-water-free production 💧 ❌ "The use of potable water for production should be the exception", the company said. Audi's Brussels site is connected to a neighbouring municipal wastewater treatment works to offtake reclaimed water. This has reduced water consumption by 80% compared to its previous water supply. - Lever 4: Increased use of rainwater 🌧 Audi believes where rainwater doesn't seep away naturally, it can be retained and used within its manufacturing sites. The company's Ingolstadt site uses collected rainwater stored underground as process water in flushing toilets. Do the water plans go far enough? The innovative process is more energy-efficient and produces less waste compared to traditional methods. Key highlights: 1. Sustainable Operations: Powered by a photovoltaic system generating over 350 kW, the plant operates on carbon-neutral principles. 2. High Recovery Rate: Aims to recover over 96% of materials, with an annual processing capacity of 2,500 tonnes. 3.
