The Olympics may be over, but the spirit of international unity and competition is something that can fuel team morale, performance, and engagement in any workplace. When I was working at Purefoods, we used to have the Ayala Olympics. Now in my current employment, we have the annual MVP Olympics, where we include not only regular sports, but talent contests, and even parlor games as well. Voluntary online sports classes for employees are not that popular. But they are beneficial for individuals and organisations. A German online gym has become our customer and we assisted implementing this service for businesses. We were part of the strategy development and sales. But that’s not the topic of this post. I want to highlight the benefits of voluntary online sports classes. ▶️ Improved Physical Health: Regular exercise can enhance overall fitness and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses. ▶️ Enhanced Mental Well-being: Physical activity helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while boosting mood and cognitive function. ▶️ Increased Employee Engagement: Offering sports classes shows that the company values employee well-being, which can boost morale and job satisfaction. ▶️ Better Team Building: Sports activities foster teamwork and camaraderie, helping colleagues build stronger relationships. ▶️ Flexibility and Accessibility: Online classes allow employees to participate from any location, making it easier for remote or hybrid teams to join in. ▶️ Cost-Effective: Online sessions can be more affordable than in-person classes, as they don’t require physical space and can accommodate larger groups. For businesses they’re tax deductible. ▶️ Work-Life Balance: Encouraging physical activity helps employees maintain a healthier balance between work and personal life, reducing burnout and increasing productivity. Sometimes workouts can be tailored to the jobs. Posture exercises for office jobs and exercises to strengthen muscles around joints for physical jobs.

Why has the traditional paintballing team outing lost its charm...? Julie Griffith and I took a long hard look at what constitutes company culture. Gone are the days when it was measured by a hefty bar tab. Then came the era of company outings: golfing, paintballing, rock climbing, or attempting to escape a locked room. These outings often catered to the competitive types or those with a penchant for speed. My most vivid memory of a company Christmas Party involved the financial controller breaking his nose in padded sumo wrestling against an account handler. Need I say more? So how has company culture evolved? Well-intentioned efforts led to the creation of mini basketball courts, spaces with cosy corners, vintage record players, and stocked beer fridges—mostly to indulge the manager who initiated them, rather than the broader staff. But now, especially post-COVID, the expectations are higher. Employees want to know: what's in it for me? what's the hybrid/flexitime policy? how much are you contributing to my pension (which, in advertising, is often close to nil)? Personal development matters more than ever, but what's the payoff for me? The reality is a far cry from JFK's famous quote: "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." For the new generation, it's more like "Don't ask me for anything until I see the full offer, including bonus, salary, holidays, flexiwork policy, and career paths, before I even respond to your email." Catering to diverse audiences... Julie Griffith recounted a company outing where karaoke was the team activity to encourage participation. But who actually participated? The confident ones, eager for the spotlight, while the shyer ones shrank away, one girl tapping her tambourine to avoid the mic. A company event or workshop should cater to the entire audience, not just one type. We're all neurodiverse (I discovered over covid that I'm an extraverted introvert—who knew?). Your average group will have a mix of people with different attention spans, communication styles, and even an inability to sit still. And let's not forget the changing attitudes toward alcohol—once a staple of traditional work events after hours. Times have changed, thankfully. Employers who understand Gen Z and many Millennials know that engagement and personal development paths can tip the scales in favour of staying with a company. This is the reality employers face. Companies need to acknowledge that younger generations have different priorities, influenced by socio-economic challenges like limited affordable housing and a high cost of living. That's why they're seeking opportunities abroad or in roles with better pay. Maybe they're onto something. They know their worth and aren't afraid to demand it.
