Check out the electric revolution that's sweeping through the world of motorsports. In its 10th season, Formula E has surged past NASCAR to become the fourth-biggest motorsport by fanbase. Yes, you heard that right. Across the first four races of 2024, viewership has skyrocketed by a staggering 40%. Last year, 68 million people tuned in; this year, a jaw-dropping 86 million have been glued to their screens. Broadcast audiences have surged from 45 million to 61 million—a remarkable 37% increase. And social media? It’s up by an impressive 44%, with 351 million impressions. Formula E isn’t just about fast cars—although the new Gen3 cars, boasting 470 horsepower and top speeds of 200 mph, certainly help. "But that strategy, and the difference between winning and losing, is not only the decision of a small brains trust at the top of the organisation, but rather the result of the input of hundreds of minds — largely unknown and split between the pitwall and the factory — providing the data and analysis that the more familiar faces can utilise. "From complex simulations to basic weather forecasting, over the course of a season there will be many “decision points” that can transform strategists from heroes to villains. There is another key point too, of course. “If you want to make a strategy team look brilliant, give them a fast car,” Andrew Shovlin, the Mercedes-Benz AG trackside engineering director, says, laughing. "Shov, as he is known in the paddock, would know. Mercedes had to wait until the ninth race of the season to claim their first podium place, before an upturn in form. In the past six races Mercedes have had six podium finishes, including three race victories. You often have races where you might have ten cars that are all within two or three tenths [of a second] on performance. Therefore they’re all a threat,” Shovlin explained from Mercedes’s Brackley factory before the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. "Strategy is a highly technical, mathematical and complex operation. Millions of simulations build a picture that determines the probability of what could happen in a race. One such simulator tool, which all teams will use in varying forms, plots each potential race plan on a graph using colour-coded lines for each team, featuring their pace across the course of the race and when they could pit. "This can cause confusion, or at least temporary irritation, when a driver moves teams and their line changes colour (as Lewis Hamilton’s will when he goes to Scuderia Ferrari next season). Teams will use a combination of data from previous visits to the circuit, analysis of where their current car performs well or struggles and live feedback from sessions to create a moving picture of strategy. 500+ overtakes and 9 different leaders during a race... - why Formula E is not the electric version of Formula 1 - The biggest misconception about Formula E is that it's the electric version of F1... The truth? Formula E is a standalone show, boasting Gen3 electric beasts that fight from start to finish. Driven by talented world-class drivers, I've witnessed: → 500+ overtakes in race 6 (astonishing) → 9 different leaders in the same race (breathtaking) → a record-breaking 142.34 KPH in round 7 (the highest average speed in Formula E history) A constant battle from the first to the last corner. The Misano races in 7 words for me? - Fun - Fierce - Intense - Passionate - Demanding - Exhilarating - Unpredictable The sheer unpredictability struck us all. It was like a karting race, so fun and crazy. We missed the noise...someone may say. The electric noise was a cool factor to the ears of the younger generation in attendance and I like it too. Plus, you can appreciate other details that the noise usually kills: - the screeching of tyres against the tarmac - the thunderous impact of car on curb - the metallic clash of vehicles - the car parts thrown around The intensity of the driving was what electify me the most. Ceaseless battles at every turn, not to mention the tactical energy management from the drivers and teams. If you have the chance, go and watch a Formula E race live. Next stop Monaco 🇲🇨 P.S.
