Looking Beyond the Core Three Indicators for WASH By Johnson Emmanuel PgMDPro While the core three indicators provide a solid foundation, several supplementary indicators offer a more comprehensive picture of WASH program effectiveness: Functionality of Water Points: This indicator measures the percentage of water points that are in working order and readily available for use. Broken pumps or non-functional wells render water access unreliable. Fecal Sludge Management: This indicator tracks the collection, treatment, and safe disposal of fecal waste from toilets and latrines. Improper fecal sludge management can contaminate water sources and pose a health risk. Water Quality: This indicator assesses the presence of contaminants in the water supply, such as bacteria or chemical pollutants. Contaminated water can lead to waterborne illnesses. Conclusion WASH indicators are vital tools for ensuring that WASH programs achieve their goals. By systematically collecting and analyzing data on water supply, sanitation facilities, and hygiene behaviors, program managers can measure progress, identify areas for improvement, and ultimately contribute to lasting improvements in public health and well-being. Strong WASH programs, supported by robust data collection, lead to healthier and more empowered communities. #WASH
