UK Defence Reviews: Ancient and Modern A week after the new Government announced a fresh Strategic Defence Review, the House of Commons Library has just published https://lnkd.in/d6VF3VpM, a handy 60 page guide to all defence reviews since 1957. Such reviews never start with a clean sheet of paper, most prove contentious (it was the Nott "Navy Cuts" Review of 1981 that strengthened my own youthful defence and political interests), few prove affordable in the medium term, others rapidly overtaken by events. However, their difficult role, in the words of this particular briefing, is to "enable[s] a government to present a forward-looking assessment of Britain’s strategic interests and requisite military requirements. It examines the defence and security landscape, identifies current and emerging threats and then decides how best to organise and equip the Armed Forces". No pressure then George Robertson, John Healey, Fiona Hill and Sir Richard Barrons! #strategicdefencereview #mod #britishstrategichistory #contemporaryhistory #politics #houseofcommonslibrary #geopolitics

I copyedited over half the chapters in this book. On this particular project, the copyeditor was also responsible for the first round of fact checking and editorial verifications. I was still in Graduate School when I was hired to do this job. The director of the Public Relations Company I interned with in undergraduate school had worked for Random House for many years. She recommended me for the task. 1. Copyediting is straight forward work. You have a style guide. The rules for the publication are clear cut. All you have to do is read the text line by line and be thorough and expedient. 2. Fact checking the work of a war correspondent who had spent many months in a war zone is not as straight forward. For one: How can someone who was not present to document the events possibly fact check the veteran writer who was? In those days I did not quite understand what fact checking in this context meant. In this context, literally every assertion gets checked. Even up this: Author states the name of the POTUS as George W. Bush. Is this correct for the year 2006? If yes, is his name spelled correctly? Is he a he? And so on. Attention to detail and knowledge of industry standards for Conflict Reporting. I developed these skills beginning with this job. What is even more rewarding than having been paid by a Big 5 Publisher as a younger professional is this: The Book remains in print and has withstood the years without having to run any retractions. But Lessons Learned teaches us this: Is it time to start re-reading (or using Ai) the reports published during the first 10 years of the War on Terror. Make sure we haven't left anything uncorrected? https://a.co/d/cB2fwRY
